camaro tach

this question is asked so much that i thought i would post as much about this as possible in one place. i've never given instructions like this before so bear with me. ok...when you get down to it it's really easy to do. i went on ebay and bought a camaro tach for 11.50. correct me if im wrong but 70-81 are the years that work. there are a couple different needle choices so that's the main deciding factor when purchasing. first start by taking your guage panel apart. there are i think 18? screws that hold the bezel on. i started with the front metal plate which is shown here. cut out the area outlined in red. be careful and take your time cut only to the depressed area. i used a dremel tool to do this.

next the tach needs some work done to it. it comes with an insulator plate on it. you need to remove that. it will leave the tach with it's head the wires and a little circuit board with a plastic plate. just take the plate off. make a note of where the wires go on the circuit (they are engraved on the insulator plate)

next you have the back plate. some people beat the hump flat i just cut it out. the red part is what gets in the way. the black dots is one place you can mount your circuit. i used the plastic plate that comes with the tach and mounted it on the backing plate of my guage setup that way i can connect the wires to the back of the setup and be done.

ok...now you will have to trim the top and bottom of the tach a little...i just used some tin snips.(it's too tall to fit in the top plate) when you take the tach apart there is a oil light there that leaves a open space on the face. what i did for this was take electrical tape...and put a short piece onto a longer piece so that the hole was covered with the non sticky side but there was enough to secure it from the back side.

yeah he did it harder way than me....he kept the circuit floating around inside. i put it through the backing plate. either way works though.

A couple of those pictures look familar Not all gen.II camaro tachs are the same. The one I used required me to cut a 1 3/4" hole in the back of the housing. It protruded through only about 1/4" so the printed circuit fit over it no problem. I sealed the hole with some 10mil vinyl tape. To allow light to reach the face I spaced it away from the front plate using cabinet door silencing pads. These are adhesive backed, and available at any hardware store. I'm probably going to disassemble mine to repaint the needles. When I do I'll take a couple more pictures.
