Re: 57 Truck build

This weekend was all about fixing some of the rust holes that came up after blasting I only had a few and after I finished that I installed the Vintage air mock up box so I can start doing the body work. Thanks to Slammed 57 for the install advice. It made the install less painful.

Re: 57 Truck build

Had a week of extreme cold weather here in Texas. Today it warmed up so I decided to go out and finish the cowel. Finished all the welding and grinding and decided to start doing some filler work. Cowel is done now on to smoothing the firewall.

Nice work on the cowel... will be doing something similar... LMC sells a one piece replacement unit cheap. Gonna try that first.

Re: 57 Truck build

Man ,looks real nice John. came out great. quick question, where you live does it have a lot of humidity? reason Iam asking if so you might want to get the cab in epoxy primer then you can put filler over that..... filler will soak up humidity and if over bare metal it may give you issues down the line( especially if its goin to be sometime before you paint) . Dont mean to intrude and I know others have difference of opinion, but its just cheap insurance , hate to see you go through hard work you been doing then to have issues.

I was planning on doing it first but the weather wouldn’t let me. I talked to my painter friend and he told me it was ok to put it on in some places. Hopefully I can get the epoxy on soon.

Question: When you did the shaved cowl, did you cut out the understructure or just laid the new cover on top like the old one bolted in and just fillet weld it in.

I bought one that didn’t have the vents in it. I first bolted it in to get the proper placement and the. Cut and welded it in. It still has the same support structure under it. See the pics. One is where I used each primer and the other is the cowel just bolted on before cutting. I cut it on the mounting hole bend.

Re: 57 Truck build

Took two days off to install the new roof. Removal wasn’t to bad just a bunch of spot weld cutting. Once removed. I found more rust and warped inner roof that I had to fix. Then coated the inner roof with por 15. I decided to buy a spot welder to make the job easier. Thanks to Slammed 57 for helping me out! It came out real good!

Re: 57 Truck build

I put the front of the truck back together to finalize the gaps and start the body work. It’s funny how these things move after you fix them and take them apart. I have a few fixes on the body but an overall good fit.

Re: 57 Truck build

Some recommend using the drivers side front cab mount as a stationary pivot and with the other mounts loosened off, pivot the cab a bit to get the gaps like they need to be. Especially hood gaps are affected.

Thanks! I did do this to the cab already. I have aftermarket doors and front fenders so I an going to grind and add some metal in places to get the gaps straight.

Re: 57 Truck build

Worked on the right side today. Have all the lines straightened out except the front where it meets the fender. I have to add some rod to the door to get the gap right. It a little over 1/4 and I want it to be 3/16. Once done then I can move over to the drivers side and start over with the welding and grinding lines.
