Which GM crate engine would you buy?

might wanna check out my build thread i swapped the 307 out for the 350 went real smooth. and 1600? is that to ship it to you? mabee they went up since i bought mine. still not all that bad IMO

Redneck, I had an Edelbrock Performer, then changed to a Performer EPS later. Any aftermarket aluminum intake will work well with this engine. I do like the EPS better though.

Just waiting for my fiance to find where she's going to get a job so we can find a house that's "between" our jobs. She graduates vet school in may, but should have a job lined up before then.

I can't do a motor swap at my apartment and my future inlaws *did* live 25 mintues away, but had to relocate to Greensboro, NC last month because his job moved. My future pops is awesome, he would have let me use his garage for a couple weekends.

I bet you computer has not been tuned either has it? Get you a good tune for that Z71 and you will see several more mpg. I hate to say that vortec headed 350's are not that great of a motor and you could put a small cam in a 5.3 with a tune and headers and blow the vortec 350 away with the same setup and get better mpg. I am fairly certain that I can and will get the 13mpg with the genIII motor. I know of too many cars and trucks that have been converted that get some damn good mpg and are driven hard. Opinions are like, well you know. We could go on and on about this but to each his own. I will know next week how many mpg a 430 + hp GenIII will get next week when I start driving mine. Like I said good luck with them ol 350 as for me I am done with them for good.

What's a Performer EPS, is that an edelbrock intake too?

Which ever motor you go with, spend a few hundred bucks on getting your carb rebuilt/tuned & new wires/plugs/cap/rotor. Why spend good money & have your new baby run crappy?

I called the local dealer I bring my Z71 to.

1436.00 for the 250hp motor and 1999.20 for the 290hp motor.

I think my mind is made up

I'll be replacing the balancer, flywheel, dizzy (cap rotor wires plugs etc), and maybe the intake? I figure about $350-450 in parts.

Yeah, I've rebuilt my edelbrock a couple times (BAD fuel tank.) I was looking at rebuild kits for that too. Actaully fairly cheap compared to new price ($225!)

All the GM Perfomance Dealers I have priced seem to be about $1350-$1400
for the 250 hp and about $1750 for the 290 hp. So the price for the 250 hp is about right and if you were going to get the 290 hp I would do a little more shopping.

Redneck, The EPS is a newer, enhanced version of the Performer 2101. It has a better runner design that makes more torque and hp over the original Performer. I could tell a difference in the swap, but not sure if it was worth swapping. If you already have an aluminum intake, I wouldn't change. But, if you're using a cast iron intake with an adapter, it's definetly worth the upgrade. If you plan on upgrading the carb, the Holley SA I mentioned earlier is pricey (almost $400), but you get what you pay for. Edelbrocks have also gone up in price. They're right at about $300 now!

Just out of curiosity, are you running headers or manifolds?

Edit- I don't imagine you would want to, but I would be willing to help you swap engines if you could get it here. I imagine Greensboro would be closer though.

The local chevy dealer also quoted me $1700 dollars for the 250 hp crate motor. He said he can have it delivered in one day and no freight charges and said he can discount the total price aslo. Plus it has a 3 yr warranty.

I checked the dealers site and printed it out a coupon for 10% of any parts counter purchase. When I buy it, I'll ask him how much of a discount he will give me and then show him the 10% off. Should pay for the sales taxes.

Wow, thanks for the offer! I still need 40 more hours of OT and I can't cash out my sick time until the end of the year (another 40 hours). That's where the $$$ is coming from. It would be at least another 6 months before I buy anything! When the time comes, I may need some tuning help to make sure it's 100% from the get go this time!

I have center dump ramhorn manifolds now with a crappy intake with the adapter. The basic edelbrock perfomer intake looks to be about $100? Not bad.


I'll definitely call some more dealers before I buy. For some reason, prices vary by a lot?

Don't overlook Summit as your best option. I shopped every dealers site I could find on the net when I bought my RamJet 350. When I found the best price I called Summit racing and they beat the price as well as shipped for free.

You can not get on top of that, and they had the motor in stock...

i think i got the wire looms from either summit racin, or oriely auto. they where not cheep. they where 75 bucks if i remember right, but they are awesome. and yea my build thread isnt very long. im in the same situation as you. (apartment) so i cant do much of anything big to it

I picked up my crate from the local dealer. Mine is the 250/260 horse model (depends on who's advertising it) It was $1340, plus the core. I know several with it and it seems like a great motor for what you want. I chose it over the 290 hp one because the torque came in at lower RPMs, which is what I think a truck should do.

Just looking around online doing a bit of research on your behalf. The first engine that you quote from Summit, correct me if I'm wrong, is GM part # 10067353.
Summit quotes this engine's specs as, "250 hp at 4,300 rpm and 350 ft./lbs. of torque at 3,600 rpm, $1695.95."

Jegs specs it as, "260hp and 350 ft/lbs of torque, $1479.99."

Friendly Chevrolet specs " 249 HP @ 5,000 RPM 304 Ft/Lbs @ 3,500 RPM $1,439.95

Scoggin-Dickey specs are "249 HP @ 5,000 RPM & 304 Ft/Lbs @ 3,500 RPM $1,379.95.

Not withstanding shipping cost factored in the prices are all over the place. I do believe that the motor you are after is GM part # 10067353, engine code LM1. Not a barn raiser, but certainly a fantastic motor with a three year warranty and all at the right price. You simply can't go wrong with this engine, if I am understanding the definition of what you are looking for; reliability, mileage, warranty and almost turn-key replacement...

This engine is rock solid and with a simple cam swap as an option down the road it's essentially a ZZ383...

also, does anyone know if GM has a shortblock, it's on the warranty page as a 2 yr warranty, but i cant find the actual part... any price on that? thanks
