Gauging interest on "volt gauge conversion kits for 67-72 gauge clusters.
It has recently come to my attention that some of you using AAW wiring kits have been told that they will not support the use of the factory amp gauge. I have edited the statement that there is a risk of fire when using a stock amp gauge with a newer high amp alternator. I cannot confirm or deny the claim. If it is a concern, then you should do further research.
With that said, I am thinking about creating a volt gauge conversion kit that would come with instructions for installation and should be a 15-20 minute job for most. I would supply everything needed for installation in a stock cluster. The needle and gauge face can appear to be stock for those concerned about looks. Let me know who may be interested in a kit and I will make a decision on whether to move forward. I will be posting photos of a conversion in a few days for all to see. I'm un aware of this issue but plan to use an aaw kit. If this is the case I would be interested in the conversion? So the stock ammeter gauge will not work?

Here is the Warning from the AAW 510089 Classic Update Kit.
"This kit WILL NOT support the use of a factory ammeter. All AAW kits are engineered to supply the optimum charge to the battery. To achieve this performance, we route our 8ga. charge wire directly from the alternator output charge terminal to the starter battery terminal. Due to the path of the charge being altered from the stock configuration, the gauge can no longer see a charge vs. a discharge, so it will not work properly. When ammeters were originally used, most generator or alternator current outputs were rated at a maximum of about 25-60 amps. Modified cars being built today typically utilize a 100 amp or higher output alternator. With these higher current units, ammeters, generally speaking, become a safety hazard. Ammeters are usually wired in parallel to the charging circuit, are typically unfused, and can short very easily causing a fire. A voltmeter is recommended as a good alternative." Tom is building me a cluster for my LS swap so I asked him if he could include the volt gauge. I guess I'm the test mule

This would be nice for people who didn't want to run an ammeter.
I'm pretty sure the stock ammeter is wired using a shunt. Unlike a regular installation of an ammeter, not all of the vehicle current runs through the meter. It may not be incorporated in the harness, but you could add it. Here's a quicky video on youtube that explains it. I'll take one if the price is right. My LS swap has the alternator run straight to the battery and no easy way to put an ammeter on it.

The factory battery gauge carries no current and is fed by 2 sources of 12V.
There's no danger of fire regardless of the rated current of the alternator. AAW may not support using the original gauge, but it has nothing to do with fire or the alternator. |
