What is this bracket?

My stock steering column has this bracket sticking out of it and it looks like it may be some kind of a detent device, anybody know for sure what it's for?

That's exactly what it is, for a column shifter.

Ben is correct. It is the detent for park. When the trans is in park the tab on the shifter arm should be in the notch in the bracket. It looks like your shift tube needs some lube.

Try this to loosen the shift tube up.

Spray some PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench, or something similar (not WD-40) into the steering column, where the shift lever goes in. Don't be afraid to give it a good dousing. After you spray it pull the shift lever up toward you and push it back down toward the dash. It should move up and down a couple of inches. Do this 4 or 5 times. This will help free up any sticking in the shift lever tube. The reason the shift lever moves up and down is because it should be pulled back towards you to shift it into and out of the park position.

Re: What is this bracket?

Thanks for the reply's guys, I'm asking because i have a tilt column that i want to swap it out with but it does not have that plate sticking out of it, is it true that on tilts the plate is an internal detente?

I can add my shift lever is a little misaligned so maybe that bracket is suppose to slide up and down and its stuck in the up position?

Re: What is this bracket?

Isn't it called a "rooster tail" or does that only apply to the ones that are internal to the trans?

Not sure on the tilt.

For the indicator alignment, after you have lubed the shifter at the top and it is moving up & down like it should, open the hood and loosen the adjustment bolt at the top of the rod that connects the transmission and the shifter arm on the steering column, crawl under the truck and manually shift the transmission into Park. Hold it in Park while someone puts the shift lever in the park position up above, then tighten the adjuster bolt back up. This should correct your indicator alignment problem.

Be sure and block your wheels before you start this.

The tilt columns do have an internal detent plate, if you look at the shift levers for both non tilt and tilt, you will notice the non tilt columns have a pointed end with a small "ball" at the end, where the tilt column shifter has a "Curved" end.
The curved end has a center divider that fits into the gates of the detent plate.
As "LocDoc" mentioned, having two people to adjust your linkage will make adjustments easier. I had to do it myself, many adjustments, but I installed a 700R4 in mine, and I made an adjustable shift rod with rod ends, sort of like a "turn buckle" right hand thread on one end and left hand thread at the other.
At least they make the overdrive indicator for the tilt columns.
Have a good one!

I appreciate everyone's help, now I'm a bit concerned tho, i don't think my tilt came with a shift arm, only the turn and tilt arm I wish i could see a comparison pic of what your referring too..

Cant post a pic now but its in my build thread, The shift lever was knocked out of park in the earlier picture, my adjustment was fine.. But the column has been pulled for the tilt to be installed, so i hope i won't be in limbo without a shift arm....

Same concerns here. So when I install the shift lever, I should find that the cloumn locks into PARK and the other gears without having to worry about the lower end detent plate?

I was told that on the tilt the detents are internal and the shift lever actuates them.

I bought my new lever but still have not installed it yet, I have a TH350, that tranny has detents in it so i adjusted the linkage without the lever when i installed it, it will be interesting to see if the addition of the lever will make me have to readjust the linkage, but i figure i may loosen the linkage to find out.
