Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

OK, maybe a dumb question....but, I had a car once that someone had replaced the rocker on one side and put it too high. As a result there was no way to adjust the door to close without hitting the bottom of the door on the rocker.
How do I prevent this from happening if I'm working on replacing rockers and supports, with doors off?
Should I take original measurement from opening of doorway. Top to rocker, at ride height and at jacked height and just try to maintain this measurement during work?
Or should I work with doors on, to prevent any problem?
There may not be much rocker left to get good measurement from??
Thanks

Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

Sure. once you have braces tacked in... movement should be minimal. Leave cab corner in place to act as a reference for line/curve. Draw reference lines on floor pan to inner top lip of outer rocker.(Like 10" inwards) Acts as a guide when re-installing outer rocker. Draw reference line with a measurement down to outer rocker on front pillar.I removed outer rocker first. Had to do some repair to lower pillars at this time. If you're replacing floorpan under foot area... remove it now.(drill out spot welds holding it to forward support) I replaced the outer edge of floor pan and inner rocker as one piece. I slipped the new panel over the old one and traced with paint marker. I then cut rotted area out shy of 1" along the line. (I lap weld.. not butt weld) I cut what was left of my supports off at this time. If you can..mark position of supports on inside of new inner rocker panel using old panel as reference. Drill spot welds out of supports and replace/repair. Drill holes through outer lip of supports where it meets inner rocker for spot welds. Slipped in new inner rocker/outer floor panel at this time and matched to the line I drew with paint marker. Screw it in place along lap weld area. Can fill holes like a spot weld when you know it fits good. Pull inner rocker back tight to supports and screw or tack weld.Once inner rocker panel is fastened.. slip on outer rocker. Inner rocker will likely need trimming where it fits into backside of outer rocker.(match line of cab corner) Drill holes in outer rocker for spot welds in same areas as old rocker. Slip outer rocker in until it meets the measurement you took prior to removal off your reference lines you drew on floor pan and forward pillar previously. Screw in place along holes you drilled for spot welds to hold. Likely have to"curl" the rocker and fasten to meet contour of cab corner. Re-install door and align. (with new pins and bushings if needed) If any adjustment/trimming is needed... remove a few screws and do it. Drill new holes and rescrew. Sorry if I was long winded.. other guys may have additional input here

Something you may want to explore that I have not tried. This is to keep alignment perfect on the doors. Before removing any bolts in the door hinges. Get the smallest drill bit drill a hole through the hinge off centered anyplace you like through the piller. Then when reinstalling the doors use that bit to get a back to original placement. Then use some RTV in the hole to hide it if desired. Someone previously posted this on the forum. I believe it would make the alignment process much easier.

Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

Just found all the new pieces I had ordered from Brothers last year when I thought I would be starting this soon....now I noticed I ordered outer rockers that do not have that extra overlap of floor as yours did. That seems like they would be better, maybe I should get them??? I do have a buddy who works in a sheet metal shop and could make me extensions for the floor, but they would not have that lip that yours has which is probably easier to align inner rocker to.
Am I thinking correctly?
Thanks

Sounds like a great idea, but I removed doors yesterday. Thanks

Ahah....now I see, your first pic is of the inner rocker piece and it extends further into the cab. That's what I need.

Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

I try to source triplus parts if I can.... I have better luck fitting their panels over other brands.(except right fenders) Inner/outer rocker assembly fit really well I found.

Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

Thanks for asking, actually I'm stuck at deciding to order the type of inner rockers that you used instead of what I already ordered. Classic has the ones like yours and they look like they would take care of the part of the floor edge that I could use. The ones I ordered from Brothers are only a flat piece of sheetmetal folded to attach to my floor edge(which I don't have much of) and don't seem to be as long as yours. Yours also seem to have the bolt holes for the piece that hangs below the front pillar, which would help with alignment. Only question would be, does the extra metal add thickness that then pushes outer rocker out beyond where I want it??

Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

The panels I used went full length of cab floor. There should be inner rocker behind your forward pillar. The front cab support is bolted to pillar... through the inner rocker if I remember right.

Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

You can see the inner rocker behind pillar in this pic. The panel I used had the hole punched in it already for the bolts to go through... from the support into the pillar

Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

ok... not mine, ripped from net. This is a rear support. You can see the lip where the support is against the inside of the inner rocker. My supports had holes drilled for the bolts already. These ones dont. On a front support.. the bolt will go through holes in that flange on cab support... through inner rocker... into threaded holes in pillars.

Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

Molberg,
Little by little you're helping me to see what this whole thing is supposed to look like. And I may regret this later but it doesn't seem as difficult with each post.
Does the rear support bolt up to the inner rocker also? I have nothing at all back there?
Thanks again

Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

It's not bad. Don't let it intimidate you. That's why I say to screw the snot out of it first.... Before welding. Easier to make adjustments that way. May have to bend inner rocker inwards... And curl outer further in to match contour of cab corner and door... Etc. remove screws and redrill. Mine wasn't quite as bad as your. Front supports wiped out though. I'll look for some more pics for u

Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

Thanks so much for all your help, I'm going to order those inner rockers like yours. The extra floor and the bolt holes seem like a great guide to not screwing up.
I guess now all the work will be grinding and cleaning to rust off to prepare for the parts when they come.
Any pics or info from you or any other members is greatly appreciated.

Re: Need to replace Cab Mount Supports...help

OK, went out to start grinding and removing rust and came up with another question....
While looking at the piece of the bottom cowl that the inner rocker will bolt to, I notice there is a sandwiching process going on down there. Am I correct in assuming the inner rocker is sandwiched between the two pieces I show here? Top right piece was bolted behind bottom left piece and seemed like remnants of inner rocker were in between the two.
There was barely any evidence to show there ever was anything between these driver side pieces but when I looked at the other side which is barely better, I could see that the inner rocker ends were in there. Was there more to the ends of the factory inner rockers than there are to the repro ones or am I not understanding this?
If you were me would you fix this piece first where it is barely holding the hole for the one bolt, or would you use it as is and weld and strengthen it after all is together?
