2bbl Rochester 2gv right?

Those carburetors are fun to rebuild, but nothing compared to 4bbl secondaries. Thought about converting?

yeah - actually, at this very moment, there is a 4 bbl intake in the back of the bed, waiting to be cleaned up and installed.... but i still havent made the jump to purchase a 4 bbl carb (yet) --- we will see....

Well like I said you can get the heater box in/out without removing the hood, but it's a serious pain.

Also, if you're ok leaving out a couple of nuts you can skip removing the fender. The way she did it is the right way though.

well, if you are lucky, that bolt on the lower corner of the housing (between the inner fender and the firewall) is not there --- and if that is the case, then you dont have to drop the inner fender... it might have been removed by a previous owner or even left out by the factory... but if it wasnt there, you were lucky!

the only reason i removed the hood was for convenience --- its easy to remove and replace.

and the only reason i dropped the inner fender was to get at one single housing bolt way down in there... even my little female hands couldnt get on that bolt without dropping the fender....

you dont need to really seal them --- just use standard hose clamps....

u dont have to take off the hood or the inner fender of drill any holes or any of that the job can be done in 45 minutes without taking anything off but the heater box

We just did my Dad's 71 two weeks ago. Didn't touch the hood, just dropped out the inner fender. The whole box was out in less than ten minutes.



Of course, then we found out the new heater core was too big.

I changed out the core in the burb about 2 years ago, didnt remove the hood or fender, the "little bolt" on the bottom was there when I took it off, .... aint there now.....

Why didn't you go ahead and replace the foam gaskets while you had it off? Just wondering...... I did mine about a year ago, I have to say that a A/C truck is a tad bit more difficult and time consuming. I replaced all the foam gaskets while I had mine apart. The only problem that I had was with the metal plate that is riveted to the fiberglass was rusted away around where the blower motor screws to the box. I tried to repair it with fiberglass.... It leaks today.

When i did mine, i had to yank the hood to put in a new blower motor w/o removing the heater box.

When i later did the heater core, i didnt have to remove the hood to get to the box, but i did have to drop the inner fender a little bit.....

to be honest, i'm not that picky about the efficiency of the heater.... perhaps i could have, but i generally dont drive my truck in the cold winter months, so it didnt much matter to me..... and since i dont have A/C, i really dont mind if the cabin is that sealed... what i was after was just to try and fix the problem myself... i suppose i could have ordered the gasket for the housing, but i didnt know about it... and i was tryin to do it cheap too... it worked...

i cant even begin to imagine what A/C would have been like.... for me, the process was very easy... much easier than i thought it would be... lots of fun too... i took my time, and enjoyed the whole process...

Good job Jewels

I did the same thing just the weekend before last. Glad to see you took the time to do it the correct way (per the repair manual). The previous owner of my truck took some short cuts, so while I had it apart I repaired the damage to heater box and replaced the seals. I got my heater core from WES, it was the correct size - only $30.00. I also cleaned about 30 years of dirt out of the box LOL. It now has all the correct bits and pieces, works great and is sealed tight. I hope the next owner appreciates it.

The non-ac heater cores are a dime a dozen. I usually get mine from NAPA.

You can get a pretty good weather stripping kit that will seal up the heater box from LMC for not too much money. I was impressed with it.
