Re: top question

You shouldn't need to do anything like that to the top, it's fiberglass.

I'd give it a glosscoat if anything!

Re: top question

The fiberglass top on my 82 Jimmy had paint over the fiberglass. The paint had sort of a 'sand finish' similar to anti-skid used on some fiberglass boat decks, but with much less sand.

When I repainted the vehicle several years ago, I removed the fiberglass top, placed it on some sawhorses and stripped all the old paint off. The bulk was removed using a 1/4 sheet electric sander. The final sanding was done with a 'long board'. Once prepped, I shot the whole truck with 2-part polyurethane enamel and followed directly with a clear coat.

At first it seemed a little strange to have a smooth, shiny top rather than the sand finish. But now I really prefer it that way.
