Re: 86 Silverado Father and Son project

Not much to update, but Landen has been driving the truck to school every day with no major issues. Still haven't added a drop of oil. I guess the old 5.7 is in pretty good shape. I did get a call last week, "the truck is hot and smoking like crazy". Oh crap?! what now? Turns out one of the old heater hoses got a hole and it was peeing down on the passenger side manifold. More of a steam show than actual over heating. Installed new hoses (no pics sorry) all is well.

Yep, only took about a half hour. I really afraid it was going to be the heater core..

Yep, I can only imagine having a ride half that nice when I was that age. Mine were worn out pieces and hand me downs that love breaking down weekly.

That's what made us learn to work on things though is having to fix them or not go anywhere.

Yep,this ride still has a bright future.

Just wanted to update this build. My son drove the truck almost every day to school. Only had one issue with a loose ground wire (my wiring) that kept him driving it a few days. I never added any oil to the old engine or tranny. Hard to believe how reliable a cheap old Chevy can be.

Re: 86 Silverado Father and Son project

Thanks Alex, he really likes driving the truck. I have had a wiring issue that comes up occasionally but other than that it's very reliable driver. I should reworked the harness from the start and that wouldn't have happened.

In fact I may be heading towards an LS swap on this one too. Soon as the time and funds are available.

This was like a good book, once you started you could not put it down.
You did a fantastic job. I just told the wife I need to get mine done. I showed her some of the finished project and she agreed. Thanks to ALL who helped you with this. Great bunch of folks on this board.

Hey James,
Thanks for checking in. Yes, he still has it and yes he still drives it everyday to college. No updated pics but it still looks great. Back in the winter member CrashOK helped rewire the engine and that fixed a short that caused it not to run every once in a while.
The windshield got customized a few weeks ago when a wild turkey decided to fly up into it.

Re: 86 Silverado Father and Son project

Well I've got a little bit of an update. Picked up this wrecked 2001 chevy pickup with a 5.3 L in it for $600. The plan is to pull the engine and tranny and stab them into the 86. Then part out and scrap the truck for $600 or more (hopefully).

It's wrecked pretty bad, but still runs and drives in that shape.

Please excuse MCBASSIN for being in the frame.

Re: 86 Silverado Father and Son project

Took the intake off to clean up the heads, really dirty in there.

Before cleaning

After cleaning

This will still be an everyday driver, so I'm not going to paint the engine, just try to clean it up good.
