Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

Thanks guys! Yes even at 17months old he's getting attached to Chief's 42 year old truck. At least twice a day when he's here he want's to go out and stand behind the wheel and drive. Who knows maybe one day he'll be driving me around.

Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

New mods are about to start

Other than a new booster and master cylinder, I really haven't done anything to the brake system. As long as they worked other mods have taken precedence. Well, over the weekend I noticed that the truck was pulling hard left and the left rear tire was locking up. Pulled the tire and drum and found a leaking wheel cylinder.

After consulting with the team it was determined that we wouldn't waist any time or $$'s repairing this. And since we are about to install a rear sway bar, 2" lowering blocks, panhard bar, Aluminum diff cover and Power Trax rear end, which will require the axle to be pulled, the decision has been made to upgrade to rear disc brakes.

I'm not going to go the big brake route, mostly because of the extra cost and because I don't intend to autocross the truck. So, I've decided to go with Wilwood rears and add new crossed drilled rotors and D52 calibers at the front.

So, stay tuned. When the parts get here, we'll start.

Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

ST,
I think your truck looks great, and you could certainly park it next to mine at any show. I didn't build mine to show either, it's truly driven every chance I get.

Here's a link to the GMC stick on center cap that I used on my steering wheel.

Here's are the same ones which are more expensive if you can't wait.

Thanks Big Daddy. Hopefully Car Boss will get a certain 55 chevy out of his shop soon so that we can start phase II.

Here are some of the things we'll be doing.
2" lowering blocks
Rear Adco swaybar
Power Trax rear diff
Finned Aluminum diff cover
Front and rear Wilwood disc brakes
Willwood proportioning valve.
New Bluetooth stereo system
New OEM outside door handles
Sound deaden both doors
New OEM interior door handles

When you list it out like this, seems like an afternoon project. "NOT".

Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

The truck looks awesome, can you give me info on the armrest with the cup holder that is in the seat I assume you can buy that and use it on a seat that does not have a cup holder. I have found Leather from a 08 Tahoe that will cost roughly the same as having my seat done like yours except black and red houndstooth with black ostrich print trim and I am tossed as to what to do.

Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

Core Support Filler Panel

I bought a core support filler panel to clean up the area between the grill and core support. I contacted screaminchevypickup, a vendor here on the sight, and he shipped one out quickly. I think it looks great. Here is a before and after pic.

Filler panel for the core support looks great....really cleans up the front of the engine compartment....can't go wrong with black....I have seen some with polished alum. or body color...black looks best IMO.

Good question J Carter. No, they're still sitting in boxes in my garage. Perhaps Car Boss will see this?

In his defense he's had a few projects that needed to be wrapped up and he's in the middle of installing a new engine and super charger in "Hank" his 58 Apache.
(go check out his build, it's going to be very cool. diceman50)

I'm sure we'll reassemble the team shortly.

Re: 72 GMC Short Step Build

Nice work on the template. I am being a little slow on understanding how the template will be used. Looks like the hole dimensions and location from the axle flange are being transferred to the template. Then, will the template be used on another axle flange to locate the holes for the larger diameter axle studs?
Thanks.

AD, it's really a fixture to hold the axle flange securely when enlarging the existing holes. I'm sure Car Boss will jump in and give a better explanation.
