How to lift cab? Can you use seat belt and bench screw holes?

Hello, I was searching different ways to lift a cab off of a 1970 chevy c10 a couple weeks ago and came across a person's comment in a thread on here (and a picture) of how they lifted their cab off by using an engine hoist. They had chains screwed into the holes of the seat belts and the front bench seat on the cab floor (I have tried to find the post but can't seem to find it).

If anyone has or knows how to do this (or could link that person's post if anyone else has seen it lately) I would like to know what size and thread bolts are used in the seat belt holes and front bench seat bolt holes (mostly looking for what thread size, i can figure out what length I need). Also, as for removing the cab, does anyone know what size nuts are the cab mounts under the frame?

I plan on lifting the cab with just the front and rear windows left in (doors and seat removed).

Thanks for any info!

I have used an engine hoist many times , made a bar that bolts to the hoist across the top , sits on the door seal lip at the top of the windsheild. Got the idea somewhere on here . works great

I used the exact same method. I had to do a double take as we have the same paint scheme!

I have done the same as above. Engine crane with some wood, held on by the center bolt in the crane. Don't forget wood stoppeds on the outsides of the cab so it doesn't slide.

I had a buddy lift his off with the engine hoist and some truckers straps through the front and back windshield holes.

Straps slipped and perma tweeked the roof of the cab.

Yup, Done.

Glad I was not part of the fiasco in any way shape or advise.

Re: How to lift cab? Can you use seat belt and bench screw holes?

I tried to lift from the bench seat mount points as I had not purchased any lumber. For me the cab kept trying to tilt too far forward, nose heavy. I ended up using the same methods as above, wood across the door openings. As you can see most of the pictures that use lumber go across the very front of the door opening for balancing. I had the doors removed and it was still very nose heavy.

I took a piece of 3/4 plywood about 3.5'x2.5' wrapped in foam. Then made a u shaped bracket and bolted it to the engine hoist, then ran a carriage bolt through the plywood and through the bracket. Set the plywood in the middle of the roof on the inside a little toward the windshield came straight up no tilting front to back. Sorry don't have any pictures but pretty straight forward. I saw it on a post in the forum I am sure you could find it doing a search.

Re: How to lift cab? Can you use seat belt and bench screw holes?

I picked mine up with doors and all glass. It was a little sketch, I ended putting the pup inside the house just case. Have to have a platform or stand to set it on that is elevated else the doors will hit the hoist, at least that was the case when I did it. I tried using the cab mount bolt holes but it did not help in my case.

Re: How to lift cab? Can you use seat belt and bench screw holes?

Thanks for all the info. I ended up lifting the cab off the frame last summer by myself. Bought a good engine hoist on sale and made a cart with wheels out of lumber to sit the cab on. Project is currently at a stand still as I have not purchased a welder yet and after running the numbers for all the upgrades I want to do, swapping a 2005 Tahoe frame under neath with the drivetrain would save me a lot of money in the end, but I do not have the space to take on a project that big yet.

Thanks again for all the helpful info!
