Re: Snake
Rattlesnakes and those other venomous types of snakes scare the cr@p out of me. That's why I like King snakes. They'll take them on. Now that's my kind of snake. Get em boy!
When my daughter was little her friend had a birthday party and the parents had hired a guy with snakes as a show. I thought it was weird for a little girls party. But it was cool and it sure beat Pogo the Clown. This guy had a huge Boa Constrictor or a Python. I can't remember. He would wrap this thing around everyone's (The dad's) neck. So I'm standing in line with the rest of the dad's waiting my turn and the guy in front of me goes up and gets this thing around his neck... And then the snake took a big piss all over him. I was just glad I was next guy in line. And not that guy.

Re: Snake
I've seen a lot of talk about copperhead sighting this spring. I have seen three on my walk this last month and never saw one there before. I think this old house has had black snakes living under and around it for the 163 years it has been here. Old stone cellar with dirt floor, log walls, lots of nooks and crannies for critters and snakes. I don't see them in the house, except a couple times while work was incomplete. I see "the big one" moving along the fence line to the road, where it will cross to get to the stream. I'd like to think I'm in a no copperhead zone around the house. I hope I'm right

Re: Snake
Black snakes are welcome around my house. Copperheads are not. Around here they have a more green and brown pattern and are hard to spot in the yard. They are hidden well in grass or leaves. If I need to go u der the house I put a Bluetooth speaker under there on full blast long before I crawl under there. They don't care much for the vibration.

Re: Snake
I don't know anything about black snakes. I grew up in L.A. But I was telling my buddy about my snake incident and he grew up back east And he said that black snakes crawl off the ground and can be chin high in the bushes.
He told me that wiped out on his dirt bike once into a bunch of bushes and had one wrapped around his leg. I'm ignorant. Do they really do that? I've never seen a snake that wasn't on the ground.

Re: Snake
I've seen snakes in trees. Good hunting. Black snakes surely climb. Not sure about all snakes but I'm sure many do
I hate to do this to you, but...

Re: Snake
I can smell 'em too. There seems to be more snakes this year. I didn't see but maybe one last year, and have already seen 4 in the last month.

Re: Snake
I like having snakes around. They keep the rodents down in my barn and wood pile.Haven't seen any copperheads just few timber rattlers and a crapload of corn and brown snakes. The rattler came out when I started the splitter next to the wood pile. Little brown startled me didnt expect him to sunning himself on my glove

Re: Snake
It does seem like more snakes this year so far. The year before, 2018 was so doggone wet the snakes were coming out of the ground. I don't know why more snakes this year but two years ago you could count on it by common sense. Water lay everywhere like I never saw before.

Re: Snake
I grew up in the PNW and only saw garter snakes when I was a kid. I was working in Kansas around 1970 and rented an old farmhouse with a limestone storm cellar next to the house. I went into the storm cellar once and saw a very large snake, didn't know what it was and I shot it full of lead. Took it out & laid it on the ground and it measured 5' 4" long. Turned out it was a blacksnake and then I wished I had let it live since there were also copperheads in the area.

Re: Snake
I was a kid about 15 and was working on my old truck with the neighbor. He was a crusty old guy but he would always help me.
My mother came out and told me to get some firewood and when I did there was a snake in the wood pile and I ran off. The old guy laughed at me and said. "That aint nothing but a Garter snake" Then he called me a name that is synonymous with a cat. You've got to love those old guys. They'll put you in your place and they don't pull any punches.

Re: Snake
Well, cougars are generally on the prowl for a snake...
BoT, I haven't seen a snake where I live now for the whole 17 years I've been here.

Re: Snake
I think females must have a better smeller than males. My wife regularly says "Do you smell that?" Me, "Nope".
