Re: Project: ____________________________

Some good progress was had this weekend, got lots more done but still lots to go. Went a little crazy on the alternator bracket, but didn't want this thing to rattle and shake the bracket to hell so went a bit overkill...lol. But I like what its shaping up to be so all good when said and done. Trimmed the fat off the intake tube and did a bit of "detail therapy" for a change of pace for an afternoon. Painted up some stuff, installed the new thermostat and gaskets, KDP plate installed, new timing cover gasket and front seal, swapped over the pulley on the tensioner, swapped over a valve cover with fill and did the filler delete on the timing cover (on board air wouldn't fit around it), etc etc...pics can explain the rest.

Re: Project: ____________________________

Frame went off to blasting, 3 coats of chassis saver sprayed on the frame and diffs/suspension (stuff sprays nice) and has been sitting for a week in the booth drying while I cleaned and wire wheeled the underside of the cab, 3 coats of chassis saver, then 3 coats of raptor liner (bed liner). Alternator bracket done, and had the alternator checked out before final mount...glad I did cause she was toast. Bought a brand new rebuild...

Been working on filling in the cab light holes and CB antenna holes in the roof along with heat shrinking the roof skin/dents, and shaving drip rails, welding up the roof seams, ground down the wind shield seam (showing signs of rust), and it got 2 coats of chassis saver as well. As well I drilled all the holes into the inner headliner skin and pillars, filled with spray foam...and roof is good and solid now along with some good sound deadening qualities.

Then my air dryer went to hell in a hand basket and internally rotted out I guess, destroying my filter and regulator. So working on redoing my air system now which has been taking up all the shop time. It needed done, so revamping a few things I was not happy with the first time around.

Ordered up a 5 gallon pail of spray on sound suppression liner. Found a source for the stuff that Audi and BMW use on their vehicles so should be as good as lizard skin I would hope, maybe even better. Definitely a hell of alot cheaper!

Got some pics.....more when I get time.

Looks great. Cab's gonna last forever and the chassis looks like something you could put a glass top on and use for a coffee table if you had a big enough living room, ha.

Re: Project: ____________________________

thanks for the comments....as usual it's turning into a bigger project than I wanted it to but I should know better by now. My OCD takes over and hate nothing worse than doing things twice, so one thing turns into 12 more. Should be 90% new truck when all is said and done, actually better than I am hoping.

Haven't touched it in a while, caught a nasty bug on Christmas day and just barely getting over it now. Kicked my arse but good...

Also pre christmas I had to revamp/replace my air dryer and air lines as it all rotted away internally and was causing havok with air tools etc. So ended up redoing one whole shop wall, replacing some stuff and some drywall/paint was in order while I was at it. Just about have that wrapped up so hoping my sound proofing will be here any day now and I can get back at the truck again and at least start putting some things back together again.

Your ocd makes for sexay updates! How did you tip the cab up like that? Also, do you have a source for your lizard skin alternative?

Brute strength and stupidity.....kidding. I hooked the engine crane up to the front of it at the firewall, then got it up most of the way....then let gravity and me on the opposite side so it didn't slam to the ground and damage the back of the cab. Coming down myself and a buddy just hand bombed it back onto the floor...wasn't too bad.

Lizard skin alternative fell through.....they only sell in 50gal quantities....and shelf life is only 3 months. Wasn't anywhere near ready to dispurse 50 gallons. I ended up caving and buying a 2 gallon pail of lizard skin.

On a side note: current progress involves a new head gasket, getting ready to order a new clutch/pressure plate/release bearing, had the flywheel face resurfaced, bought the sealed bearing for the pilot bearing upgrade, hoping to drop it off to get machined tomorrow. New pan gasket, valve covers are painted and new gaskets, did a polish job to all the injector lines, blasted and painted up the belhousings, transmission/tcase/twin sticks/spacer are all together and in one piece and painted now waiting to be installed. Rear main seal replaced, and a pile of other small gaskets/seals.

Great work! You sure are making great progress. I'm still in the phase of setting my garage up. I can't seem to get any truck time in. Something always tends to come up sort of like your air system situation. Keep up the great work though!

Re: Project: ____________________________

NV4500, advanced adapters spacer, NP205 tcase, Offroad Design twin stick kit, 1410 rear yoke swap, along with a little bit of lip stick, new seals etc.

New head gasket, timing cover gasket, front and rear main seals, valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket, adjustable over flow valve, temp sensor swapped over, killer dowl pin fix, grooved belt tensioner (AC delete), new thermostat/seals, engine mounts in place....as well as a bit of spit and polish to the stainless fuel lines throughout the whole engine and a bit of paint. Still waiting on new injectors....

Got the old flywheel machined, and bought the bearing upgrade for it. Dropped it off at the machine shop today to get done.....then to find out that I can't get the clutch I want without buying a kit that includes a new flywheel. Damnit anyways.

Alternator bracket all done up, new alternator in place (tight fit but it went), new alternator case was a tiny bit larger in a few spots compared to the mock up one I used. Took some massaging to get her in there.

Not my car (I wish).....decided to go with this color on the truck, but am 99% sure I will be doing the complete truck in raptor liner (green colour) inside and out. Loved it so much on the dually that I wanted to do the complete 4x4 with it. Either way, this is the colour I will be using one way or the other with grey interior.

I really wouldn't do the raptor liner. If you ever sell the truck, it devalues the hell out of it!

Depends I guess.....I plan on using this truck so having to repaint or fix stone chips etc on a regular basis depreciates my wallet over the time of ownership too...lol. And we live in an area where they used alot of road salt as well, so longevity is high on my list as well. I have two kids and a dog that will be in/around it all the time, live in the country....so it ends up being the lesser evil. I don't want to have the high maintenance paint job...been there, was a pain in the arse for the most part.

My 68 burb might get the "pretty lipstick".....

Re: Project: ____________________________

Been a while since I updated, so here it goes...nothing earth shattering but still progress non the less.

Then I was having issues with colour choices, so I decided to have Chad at Rendered Rides do up a few different renderings to help me decide. Glad I did...cause not going with green anymore I don't think. A: because my last big build was olive drab, so why build basically same truck over again B: I just like the silver better and should be a bit more timeless than the green that a person may or may not get tired of over time. Don't get me wrong, green is my absolute favorite colour, but.....

Nice. The silver does look better. BTW, the painted mirrors are finally being reproduced, if you don't already have some. I think I saw them in the Brothers catalog.

Thanks, and no I'm good......I have more square body parts than I need already. I have probably around 10 sets of mirrors (stainless/painted). Cleaning house on all my square stuff when this truck is more a less together...moving on to my 68 Suburban after this. I've built so many squares over the years I just want to move on to something new.

Re: Project: ____________________________

Traction setup...and as much as I would like to take credit for this stuff, it's actually coming from a buddies build in which he is swapping out to 3.73 11.5" AAM rear and basically this is exactly what I was going to build anyways, so just saves me a pile of work in the end and money too. Just trading diffs....how could I say no?
