Re: anyone into amc cars?

I can't say I love them but I definately like them. My mom has a nice unrestored survivor Rambler American 440 convertible. Been in her family since 70'. It is by no means a show car but it gets alot of compliments at the local cruise nights. It has the optional overhead valve 6 cylinder and not the flat head 6. I had a friend in college who had an AMX that was pretty sweet. Personally I have always admired the Scramblers.

My brother has a amc spirit with a 390 i think. Could be wrong on the size. I know its a heap and it just sits there rotting.

Re: anyone into amc cars?

I've had a couple of 69 rambler americans, still got a 66 classic and my dads old 65 classics, all need restoration. I have a 74 hornet, I may pull up to my house and get it running, dont know too many sites, most engine parts are still availalbe over the counter, just not a great following like the truck or hot rod crowd..

Re: anyone into amc cars?

I had a thing for Gremlins for a while there. The last one I built was a 72 X model with a 304 and 4 speed. When i blew the 304...I dropped in a 390 out of a 68 AMX.

Re: anyone into amc cars?

The AMC 401 is one bad a$$ engine. There is a reason you see wheelie bars on the back of Gremlins that have one under the hood. I put one in my 76 CJ-5...the front end would come up off the ground with very little effort.

Re: anyone into amc cars?

I had a few ramblers in my time, but unfortunately none now. Also none of the pictures survived over the years during my many moves. I had all of them in the early '70s.

I had a 59 Rambler wagon with overdrive and a 60 sedan. In '71 we bought a '69 AMX with the 390, I called the color Aztec Gold, but I am not sure what it really was.

I drove it a year or so before trading it in on a '72 Javelin. I only had it a year or so when it got repo'd because I lost my job. I liked all them, but it seems Ramblers are real rare now.

The AMX was pretty tricky to drive if you gave it a lot of throttle since the rear end was so light and the front end was so long, a kick to drive though.

Re: anyone into amc cars?

I've always been interested in AMCs. Like international, they're kind of that redheaded stepchild of the American auto industry, and a lot of people hate them for that. I guess for no other reason, that's why I like them.

There's an estate sale I'm going to in April that is selling a '66 Rambler American 440 Convertible. I'm looking forward to checking it out, it's only maybe 10 minutes from my house but I have never once seen it out on the road.

You can try Moparts, they have a huge discussion board and several transaction boards for anything Mopar related.

Re: anyone into amc cars?

In 1987 I tried to buy a 70 Javelin SST with a ram air 360, auto, roof spoiler, red with courdory (sp) black interior, tach, ralley wheels, never touched or screwed with other than ugly shackles and studded winter tires. No-one could ever get the carb to work right, so it sat for a decade. It was my friends brothers car, and I offered him $1500..a fair amount of cash back them. He would never give me an answer (he was a total a@@) and finally sold it to some relative for $400. They promptly got it running and smacked it into a pole. Years later I asked him why he never sold it to me and he replied "I didn't think you had the $$" ??? Why wouldn't he tell me to bring it over pronto? I just don't get some people. Anyway, muscle AMCs are neat cars, and after that missed opportunity back in '87 I have a real soft spot for 70 Javelins.
