Angry expensive parts

was bidding on a set of N.O.S. door latches on ebay, i bid them up a little over 90 bucks for the pair and figured that was enough. i lost them so i decided to call the dealer and see if the part numbers were still good. to my surprise both numbers are still available, and i know why now--196.00 for one side and 192.00 for the other--thats damn close to four hundred bucks for the pair. i guess i'll keep my eyes open for good used ones in the wrecking yards from now on !!!!!!!!!!!!!
sorry, but i needed to vent a little bit, seems to me that G.M. is trying to screw us classic truck owners over, big time.

My dad paid $44 for a NOS glove box latch for his 66 mustang. All he needed was the spring, but couldnt find one in good shape. Im sure a junk yard glove box door would of, but oh well.

Angry

Bill,
they were making money at 43.00 apiece, now they're almost 5 times that much, that's criminal. guess i should have bought some last month. i even tried using our shop discount but it only dropped them down 20% so i'll be using good used ones from now on.

What gets me is it is the exact same part that they have had for years and just keep raising the prices. there is no additional manufacturing costs or anything.

Talking

Most latches fail when the gear shaft starts to spin in the outer support of the latch. You can actually spot weld the shaft and that outer support which will usually give you many more years of life. So, keep this in mind and take a second look at used latch assemblies for excessive wear and consider a simple and cheap fix~~~~~. Once fixed, lub the %$# out of them!! Huck

What in the hell is GM doing? A lot of their parts jump up 30%-40% at a time. Nothing else in America is going up like that! $43 to $190---how is that possible? I keep buying GM parts for more than I sold the last ones for. This is really stupid. So much for the "Heartbeat" of America...should be the fleecing of America.

I priced the ZZ4 through my dealer in October and they were willing to give me the motor at a $100 over cost, so it was $3456.00. I went back last week and confirmed with them this price as I am getting closer to being able to order the engine...anyway, he said the best he could do now would be $3900.00!!! I couldn't believe the motor had gone up that much in 60 days. Retail on the ZZ4 is now around $5,000.00!!! I'm starting to think I could have my old 4bolt built for that.

Lucky Trucks!

We are so lucky these trucks are so popular, because of all the parts that are being made after market. NOS has gone nuts! Everyone chip in $5 to send to Taiwan...and if you are buying a new car, buy a Toyota or Honda! "Like a Rock"...should be between a rock & a hard place!

Boy you think that's bad, go price the 81 - 87 GM parts. I have been sprucing up my 87 4x4 shortbox and I ran across a NOS front fender. Thought I would check what it now costs new before I bought this one privately. Needless to say my newly aquired $100 NOS fender that was around $135 list just a few years back is now $563 list today. And the 6 foot fleetside bedside that were like $535 list are now like $1050 each. Even the dang plastic GM grille with no trim whatsoever list for $128! They were about $58 list. I hate to admit this but the aftermarket repop grille for $45 with shipping looks just fine when you put the original GM bowtie and trim on it.
GM is going to try and get to our pocketbooks without selling a new truck if we want our bowties to look new. HF

Problem is that GM quit making the latches. Prices started going up about 3 months ago. I tried to buy some then, got a right side for $70, couldn't find a left one. Bought an aftermarket for the left and had to work on it to tighten it up similar to the NOS part. My parts guy told me the aftermarkets are the typical junk that don't last, but if that's all you can get...

Don't blame the Chinese or the Taiwanese. Blame the U.S. Businessman who figures he can cut costs by 75% by contracting through Oriental manufacturing plants and thus bypassing U.S. Union Labor costs, environmental and quality control costs. So he takes that 75% savings and drops the price by 20% over what the US manufacturers can offer. He still makes a load of money and the only people getting screwed are the American laborers who he could give a damn about as long as his snot nosed brats are put through Dartmouth.

A supplier I know took a small part to a USA manufacturer to get a quote for tooling and manufacture of a part, they examined the part and ended up quoting them a little over $60,000.00 to make the tooling only, they then quoted nearly as much per 1000 ran for production. The Taiwan company that was approached quoted $9000.00 for tooling & delivery of 5000 pieces. He is selling his product for $3ea now, if the american company had done the part he would have over $120,000.00 in 1000pieces. Thats a manufacturing cost of $120 per part before figuring any markup.
With manufacturing quotes like these I understand why 90% of the reproduction and aftermarket parts lines are made elsewhere, especially when you find that there are companies overseas willing to produce quality parts.
