68 swb build

Hello folks, I purchased this truck some years ago pulling it out of the black berry bushes outside of Hillsboro Oregon. After running the vin. I came to learn that it was built in Freemont California and left the factory with a 350, 4 speed, and a 12 bolt posi. A rare find I thought. I started building my dream truck by tearing it nearly competely apart and as life and other projects got in the .way, there it sat for nearly three years, in peices. This last fall as times seem to get a little harder, projects and toys went up for sale. I had a lot of people come look at the truck in pieces and now one wanted it. So I began putting back togather and as I did not only did I sell enough items to stay afloat but I fell in love with this old truck all over again. It is now a running/driving project. I have recently converted it to power breaks, electric choke, and power steering. As we have two small children it will never be a show truck but more like a hoodride at least till the kids are gone. I am looking for a 4.5 and 6 or 7 static drop and have all the parts I need to convert it to five lug disc and 5 lug posi as well as another rust free lw hump auto cab and tranny to some day maybe convert that as well. Life on a shoe string. Thanks

Re: 68 swb build

Yanked it out of a field in Hillsboro-huh? I grew up in Hillsboro....small world. Anyhoo, site rules states that any mention of a Chevy or GMC truck or related parts must be accompanied by, and I quote, "a plethora of photographic evidence."
Post up them pics brotha' and stay in the good graces of our ruthless moderators!

JK dude- we all would like to see your ride!

Re: 68 swb build

There is a pic on my profile page. It currently has 67 front fenders and a shaved bed. Soon to be static dropped with 20x10s and 20x8.5. Still not sure about cutting the frame up for a cnotch considering what I think to be a rare truck. But I have never been one for restoration. Strip it and stroke it school

Notch it, drop it, chop it, whatever. It may be slightly unusual but it's not rare to the point of careful preservation. Do what you want with it.
What kind of 4 speed are you running?

Re: 68 swb build

Was glad to find out today that Brothers still has their stage three drop kit available even though it is not in their catalog and it includes nearly everything I need and is within my budget. A local tire shop that I have been doing buisness with for years will bring in the tires and wheels and carry them on an account like they have done so many times before.

Re: 68 swb build

Your right, this thread needs pics. It should be easier to up load off my 3g phone. When I touch choose a file nothing happens. No need for parts, thanks though. I would only assume it to be the stock four speed as it has a granny and no top end. Hoping to solve the problem with a 5 lug posi out of a 71 and the new tires will be 29.5" tall over the 27 tall now on it. If that doesn't work I may change the gears in the rear end.

Re: 68 swb build

I can't upload from my phone either. I was just curious if you had a granny box or a car 4 speed. Mine is a three speed that was moved to floor shift but I'm thinking about putting a 5 speed overdrive in.

Re: 68 swb build

Yep that was another thought, along with a hydrolic assist. When I first started this project I had my own shop and was making great money, a twin turbo charged big block was the plan. No expenced spared. Funny how life and inerests can change. Now I am just happy to still have it and to work on something. My eight year old son got his first welding lesson this last weekend, loved it and did pretty good and my five year old daughter just wants to help dad in the garage. She's gunna be trouble.

Re: 68 swb build

Cool there is some local guys on here. I am sure you have seen my trucks around town, slammed black 68 stepper with factory 327 and my baby blue 79 2wd blazer with a big block that now sits on south main street. Both sold this last fall. I picked up a set of buddy buckets for 75 bucks at a local tire shop that was closing their doors. They are in pretty good shape but blue in color. The local upolstery shops want 600+ to redo them. Anyone out there have any ideas?

Re: 68 swb build

I want to order my wheels and tires today. Here is what I have in mind. Brothers 4.5 and 7 drop, 20x10 with 295/40r20 on the rear and 20x18.5 with 255/40r20 on the front. Does anyone know of a fitment issue with this setup? Thanks

Re: 68 swb build

I have another 67-68 grill assembly much straighter than the one on my truck so today I applied aircraft stripper numerous times to remove all the old paint. I thing this will cut down on the sandig time dramatically. The 67 front fenders I had sand blasted and powder coated. A mistake that I will never do again. The powder coating is nearly imposable to do bodywork over. Who's idea was that anyway.

Re: 68 swb build

Most everything came from Summit Racing as they carry the only drop spindles engineered to correct the geometry of the lowered front end. Starting with a 4.5/6 drop but leaving room for a possible 5.5/7. I figured out that if I change my avitar to current photo of progress it will post off my mobile.

Re: 68 swb build

Dude....where's the pics? You can't just post a link to a photobucket account- that's cheating! I know there is a FAQ about how to embed photos in your posts'. Generally you'll need to copy the pics from your phone to your PC, run 'em through a re-sizer (so they aren't too large of a file) and then attach them to your messages.
Nonetheless, even without pictures- I can imagine what is going on in your garage and think it's gonna be kick ass! Also, your question about tire/wheel fitment is totally dependant on what the backspacing of the wheels are. The overall size of the rims and tires should fit just fine, but you could run into trouble if the backspacing is wrong. Generally a 20x8.5 front fits real nice with around 4.25" of bs. In the rear with a 20x10 rim- most guys run 4.5-5.0 bs.
