Crew Cab Issues: Sell or Fix - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok heres the deal- For those of you that know me, please excuse the momentary lapse of reason. Those that do not- please feel free to beat on me:
The truck in question is my 72 GMC C2500 Crew Cab. It is loaded with a 402/ turbo 400; P/S; PDB; Leaf rear; 3:54 gears; aftermarket AC ( it is removed) Ohcre / white two tone with the deluxe trim level.
I have only personally seen three of these trucks in my travels and the other two were Chevrolets. I have never seen a GMC, nor have I ever seen a factory Big Block Crew Cab. I have the original owners manual as well as the protect-o-plate for the truck.
I am fairly confident in stating that this is
an extremely rare truck. I would say it is one of a handful of these that may have ever existed. I know if I sell it, I will never find another.
I have owned the Crew Cab since 2000. It has been in "hibernation" for a number of years due to my business venture that failed. Upon it's return to my immediate possession, I have noticed that it has deteriorated to a new level of dis-repair.
I am at a point where I am unsure if I can fix the truck myself. The cab has some serious rust issues that are going to take a lot of welding and fab work to complete. I have two donor cabs for the sheetmetal that I need. Unfortunately space is limited at my house to perform the necessary repairs. The other thing that is limited at my house is *time*...I just don't know if I have the time to give the truck the attention it deserves. All of this begs the question, why did I buy it back? Well a very good friend and board member was holding it for me and I did not want to go back on my word to him.

My intentions have always been to make the truck into a crew cab dually ( I have the step side fenders in the basement) But with each passing day, my patience and enthusiasm diminishes a little more. I am starting to face the reality that I may be way out of my realm of ability when it comes to this truck.

So do I sell it and purchase a truck that I can use as is?

Or do I suck it up and stick with this truck since I have wanted one all of my life?

Body work really isn't that scary. I was really concerned about doing mine, but I just got outside and got it done, and seriously, it turned out really nice!

However, we are all different, so you may find it best to sell the old girl, but I am sure it'd be a universial feeling of regret a few years down the road when you are capable of fixing up your baby

I'd sell it if you are just keeping it because it's unique.
I'd keep it if you are ready to devote 1 years worth of work (within a 5 year span) and spend about $15,000 minimum to restore it.

Hard choices, but the rarity of the truck means it deserves someone's attention. Sounds like you aren't exactly in love with the truck since you said you only bought it back in order to keep your word. I'd say sell it and sink the money into something you enjoy.

Sounds like you already made up your mind. Sell it. If you have no enthusiasm for it then get out of it. Thats why i just sold my 68 Extcab. And my 1 ton dually. No excitement for it anymore.

SUCK IT UP AND DON'T SELL IT!!

Even of it takes you a real long time to fix it and bring it back to its former glory, you should keep it, as you said it yourself is a pretty rare truck, however if you at thened decide to keep it keep me in mind, I always wanted one of these, have I mentioned? DON'T SELL IT!!

I guess my biggest problem ( well at least vehicular speaking

) is that I KNOW I will regret it someday, but I am also wrestling with the fact that the one commodity I don't have any of is TIME. My job is such that I don't have much free time at home, and well with a wife and three kids, it's hard to find those precious moments to actually get something done...This weeknd was the first time I actually have had any time to get anything accomplished and I am far from getting it reliable yet.

The other problem is that my hauling on the side has started to become more frequent, and I am considering buying something to do that with so I can stop using the wifes Sub.

Too many trucks- not enough time/ cash.

Actually Andy I have thought about that. The only thing that scares me is I have seen how much it deteriorated the last time I let it sit for any length of time.

and Andy- I aint gettin any younger...

As for some of the other comments- I used to have a real affection for this truck. This particular truck. It has faded though due to it's condition and maybe the realization that I don't have what it takes ( time/ talent/ dedication) to finish it like it should be.

It is your decision to make. If you decide to sell it...just make sure that you sell it to someone who is going to restore it to its orginal condition. I would not convert it to a dually or stepside unless that is the way it came from the dealer. It will be much more valuable unmodified and turned back to pure stock "as delivered" from the dealer or chassis builder in 1972. Just my 0.02!

I know how difficult it can be to find free time. That is why my current project has taken more than 2 1/2 years and counting. Time can be hard to come by and a total project like what you are looking at can be overwhelming. You have a hard decision to make.

I would say keep it unless you absolutely need the money or something. It's not costing you anything to sit there. (Unless you're paying storage fees or something like that). I had a decent '71 chevelle that I had to make the same decision on about 15 years ago and I have regretted selling it for the last 14 years..............Jerry

I would keep it. I am usually a "restified" kinda guy but considering your truck I'll side with CPNE on this one.

Store it. Your skills/time may not support a restoration now, but how about a "preservation"? Take the carpet out, go down to the car wash and pressure wash the underside. Then grind off the surface rust and (insert rust converter name here) it. Spray bomb over it and keep it in covered storage. Deterioration will slow WAY down.

You will have time later. You may be a doddering old fool but a least you will be a happy doddering old fool.

I bet you would not have any trouble selling it. Besides maybe someone here might be able to turn it into a real head turner if you don't think you can with your time and ability.

If you don't want it anymore, might as well sell it to a board member, since quite a few members here have expressed interest. Better to have someone restore it then to just let the thing rot to death if you know you will never get around to fixing it.

Many,including me,have been in your position before.I always "want" to keep everything.Even if it`s 20 years`til I get to it.The thing is,if you can`t keep it were it won`t deteriorate,you`re work required to restore it will keep growing until it gets to the point no one wants to take it on.They`ll just look and say,"shame it was left to sit".It`s a hard decision,but this is one reason you can always find cool stuff for sale that you think,"why would anybody want to sell such a ride"?
