1969 C10 water pump

Ok so in my 69 c10 I have a sbc350. This truck came with a 350ci, but not the one that's in it. The motor I have now is out of a 1978 K10 or 2500, according to the numbers I've found on the motor. The Po I got it from I'm assuming put this in. The water pump is a long pump and the outlet to the bottom hose is clocked to far down, causing the lower radiator hose to kink on the frame. I got a water pump for the 69 year but no provisions for the power steering or alternator. Alt is on passenger side. I don't want to buy new brackets, was wondering if anyone else has run into this and what you may have done? Pictures if you got em of your set up. Thanks

I stick to stock due to ease of replacement of things when they go bad. Usually keep some spare parts on hand knowingly anticipating when something will be going bad.

Re: 1969 C10 water pump

Yep, 69 will be a short pump, you have a long one - if you swap anything, you kinda have to swap all. I'd look for a different radiator hose and use the long version of the pump, otherwise, brackets, alignment, all that stuff is out the window. It's a lousy problem - I am in the same boat, trying to decide which way I'll go as well while I consider my engine options. Would really just like to find an original 72 truck 350 that hasn't been bored out a few times already

Re: 1969 C10 water pump

I'm thinking about trying a flex hose, but with the angle og the outlet its gonna be a tight bend. I'll try it if that doesn't work then its back to the drawing board. Thanks for your help.

Re: 1969 C10 water pump

I will touch on PS brackets . Alt brackets the right Pulleys systems. The driver side alt bracket Using of the Newer style fan clutch the right shroud and if you can find them using the 7 blade metal Dodge 340-440 metal fan blades for maxuim cooling that will take the 1974 454 extreme duty fan clutch that will work on are 283-327 short water pumps

This will help some of you that are running the edalbrock alum Performer intake.

I will touch on using the temp sending unit switch on the intake and using the thermostat housing from the 1960-1968 that used the straight forward housing instead of the the one that curves tords the drivers fender.I will show you witch hose to buy that will line up with your top radiator out let and keep it out of the way of the Alt.

I will show you the driver side alt brackets that make all of your new re pop M&H harness work flawlessly

Re: 1969 C10 water pump

this is on the ALT brackets the right ones for the 1969-72 but can work on the 1960-72 as long as you don't have HUMP beads.

the ALT brackets i'm showing you where ment for car or truck the longer reach bracket meaning the black one is the factory truck one the brown one is for the car they both work the same one takes a long belt the shorter one takes a shorter belt

Re: 1969 C10 water pump

Both of my trucks came with the long style pumps when i bought them. both with alternators on passenger side, and both wiring harness butchered up to make them work. I completed my yellow truck about 2yrs ago, with no problems so far. Working on my green truck now this week.

Do the complete change over back to original for keeping it simple. Order your new water pump, fan clutch, belts and hoses. Get a new fan shroud. This is a weekend job once you have the correct pulleys.

Re: 1969 C10 water pump

ive got a 1972 c10 with a 1979 elcamino motor in it, kinda same

had to goto junkyard and get all pulleys and brackets from a 1973 to i think 1985, got lucky on mine,
found a 1982 same setup as my truck, no ac, has power steering and manual transmission, although i think the pulleys would of been right either way
i already had an alternator that was right(pass side) the power steering pump on the 72 would not work, i took the junkyard one

now all pulleys and equipment lines up very well

on the radiator hose,(new 3 core aluminum radiator) i went to advance auto parts and spent some time there,
part # E72048
funny it fits a 2000 to 2003 dodge dakota with the 5.9 v8, lower hose

molds around everything very well

good luck

Re: 1969 C10 water pump

I may have the right PS bracket, but its been rigged to work off the alt mounting position. That's why I asked for pics, the PO was the king of jury rig, (well maybe not the king) but he was really good at it. I'll look at it and see if It can be made to work in the proper position, possible a different pulley may be needed. This truck originally had AC so I plan on going back to it.

Re: 1969 C10 water pump

Using a long water pump would be easiest...for now...BUT
Beware, not all long pumps are the same...

If you know for sure that the engine is a 78, you are good.

The 77-86(long) pumps are all the same...The 76 pumps are a one year only deal. I can't remember what the differences were on 73, 74, and 75 pumps they might all be the same.
The only short pump used from 73 on was for a Corvette, and it was different from the 72 and earlier short pumps. There MAY be some weird application of a short pump from 73 and on, that's not a pickup, regular car of Corvette, but I don't remember applications that obscure....

Re: 1969 C10 water pump

remember Elcomino's have a lack of room under there hood. That looks like a nightmare. You really need to find some one online that is parting out a truck and buy all the front brackets Pulleys and PS pump brackets. The set up you have is made for just one truck an that is Elcomino's spend the 250.00 trust me you will like your self in the end.

Re: 1969 C10 water pump

Twoskies, you have the same set up I have. Was hoping I had the right brackets but no such luck. All this because the frame has a lip for strength I think, that is sticking into the bottom hose. I might just box the frame there and trim the lip off.

Do you have a picture of that??? I would like to see what's up there...

No big concern to box the frame there. On the big block pickups the frame was narrowed quite a bit on the top, for exhaust clearance. I wonder if another hose might help.

That's it stsalvage, except with newer style water pump outlet extends down further and causes the rad hose to bend over the frame rail.

Re: 1969 C10 water pump

When I bought my 69 c10 it had the alternator on the driver side and the upper radiator hose played on it.
When I built my new motor I bought a fully kit from summit. I was 100 bucks or so. It moves the alternator to the passenger side and comes with all the pulls and new steering bracket. Very happy with it.
