Re: 4 speed. Conversion

Cant say that would be my preference...M-22 behind a 454...will be ok only if you are gentle...

Why drop the TH400?

If you are going manual I would look more into a 5 speed with OD for better cruising etc....

Just my opinion...

Re: 4 speed. Conversion

The TKO500 is a popular swap but I'm not a fan of the 3.27 first gear. I am putting a McLeod street 5 speed behind my 427 and planning 3.73 gears in my Corvette. It is rated to 500#/ft.

You will spend a ton of money however. The TKO is $2500 plus extras and the McLeod is right at $3000 with the speedo adapter for GM.

You can do something like an AutoGear M23z which should be as strong as an M22 but has a 2.95 first gear so you can run 3.07 or similar in rear to have decent highway manners. They are in the $2400 range.

A REAL M22, of which there are significantly fewer manufactured than people claim to have, are $$$$$$. And the 2.20 first gear sucks for a road car.

The least expensive best street 4 speed would be one of the cast iron Super T10s from a late 70's Z/28 with the 2.88 first gear. That and some 2.73 behind your big block would be a good all around combo. If you could find one it shouldn't be more than $750 I'd think.
