my 68 GMC (with questions)

here are a couple of pics of my 68 GMC short bed. there is no SPID but i have some paperwork from the dealership. when i got it it had a step-side bed. the bed was white so it wasn't from this truck . it had a painted white roof but it looked like 67 style. i dont think the sides were white below the trim either.
is there a way to verify if it was fleetside or stepside? where would numbers on the frame be?

You may get lucky and find the build sheet still under the upholstery. Or look up the original owner. Long shot but you never know.

Re: my 68 GMC (with questions)

I was lucky, I sent mine in to vintage vehicle services and got back all my information.
Unfortunately it’s only a Canadian thing.
Nice truck though, I’d like to change my stepper over to a fleet side as well in due time.

Re: my 68 GMC (with questions)

Do u mind if I ask---what do u mean "its a Canadian thing"? I know my fender side was made in Canada. Is there a place to ask about my truck in Canada?

Re: my 68 GMC (with questions)

Using the number from your paper work CE10DPB77121. Shows us its a 2wd v8 1/2 ton wideside built in Pontiac MI 1968. You can go here to see how I got that. GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders

So it looks like the bed is right.

Re: my 68 GMC (with questions)

Bed type is in the model#, 6th and 7th digits (7th & 8th on '72). 04 is Fenderside/Stepside and 34 is Wideside/Fleetside. 03 would be cab & chassis.

wow good info there. too bad they dont say if it was a shortbed. i dont have any reason to doubt it. the truck was totally in pieces when i got it. there was no evidence of the frame being cut. i did not find any cuts or welds. i didnt find any numbers either.

Re: my 68 GMC (with questions)

Your paperwork says body side moulding. That would eliminate stepside.

These are model type questions you are asking... bed type (body style) and wheelbase are what determine the model, all found in your model#. The 4th and 5th digit (5th & 6th in '72) show the wheelbase, 07 is SWB and 09 is LWB... 10 is 133" 1t frame (longhorn, cab & chassis and Fenderside/Stepside).

So CE1 is 2wd V8 1/2t. CE107 is a shortbed. CE109 is a longbed. CE10704 is a short Fenderside and CE10734 is a short wideside

EDIT: Sorry, I overlooked you don't have that in your paperwork. It should have been, but...

Trucks produced in Canada and made for sale in Canada you can pay $100 and they will give you the info on your truck.
https://www.vintagevehicleservices.com/
Email them with the vin and they can tell you if they can get the info.
I decoded my VIN online and got wrong/conflicting info as far as year and manufacturing plant. Glad I did it, they confirmed what I needed to know.

Re: my 68 GMC (with questions)

While the VIN does indicate it is a wide (fleet) side, I don't know that the VIN indicate wheelbase on their own without the model number.

If the original poster has looked at the frame and has found no evidence of cutting and welding, it is likely a true shortbox, which would be good enough for me, its a nice truck. If you suspect that frame has been swapped, VIN might be on top of the front frame rail by the steering box.

Sharing, below, my own 1970 Canadian built info.

Re: my 68 GMC (with questions)

Could be a frame swap.

Re: my 68 GMC (with questions)

You need a magnifying glass! Whether that is a 7 or 9 is interesting.

I don't know what the DD would be, it might be a day of the month or the week code. Never thought about it much.

Re: my 68 GMC (with questions)

Looks like it's a nine in the model number. It looks like all the other 9's on that page, and not like any of the 7's

Re: my 68 GMC (with questions)

i looked up the op's name on facebook. he passed away in 2002. the first person i reached out to ended up being his daughter. here is her response to a couple of questions

Yes the roof was white. I had forgotten that. Oh wow! My dad loved that truck so much and babied it. Kinda makes me said it looks like that now. I’d like to see pics when you get it done. It has always been a short bed, yes.
