T 5 conversion reverse light help

I have a 1970 C10. The truck has the original 250. I converted from 3 on the tree saiganaw to a floor shift T5. I also have a remanufacted floor shift steering column from 70shortfleet (fellow board member) that I'm very pleased with. I need ideas on how to get the reverse light to function again.

And my reverse lights are always on.

Re: T 5 conversion reverse light help

External....

Does your column have the Neutral start switch setup?

What trans is in your truck?

phase_one....

The reverse light switch on a T5 is on the trans and has two wire connections on it....
you should use the switch as a bridge to provide power to the reverse light circuit.

Let me know if you need more info....

AussienNC. Wire from the switch on the transmission to the plug that plugs into the neutral safety switch? The column does not have a neutral safety switch.

Re: T 5 conversion reverse light help

I think mine has been thrown together.
I have the 200r4, and it starts in gear. There are some wires coming from the trans that have been cut. I think I'm in this for a long ride of redoing everything the correct way.

Identify which wire on the neutral start switch supplies power to the reverse lights....
Note....make sure the reverse lights correctly function and have a good ground before you start.
Find the reverse light switch on the T-5 and test it using a multimeter to make sure it completes a circuit only when the trans is placed in Reverse.
Run two wires down to the reverse light switch and connect one wire to each terminal on the switch....
Inside the cab, one wire connects to the wire on the neutral start loom that feeds to reverse lights and the other wire connects to a fused power source that is only hot when Ign switch is On....

Enjoy ! Hope this helps...

Several questions from your response....

Check the steering column where the gear shift levers are located for a small switch that used to ride on the 1st / Reverse lever....if the lever is removed, the switch will be on all the time, explaining your lights on all the time...check close, as PO may have just connected the wires together....

Post a pic of where the wires have been cut on the trans...
also post pic of the end of the wiring loom that's been cut for the trans...

The truck is starting in gear as it has not had its wiring modified for auto trans use....
its still thinks its a manual trans...

I have to assume you have no convertor lockup ?

and no overdrive either?

We can help, but need pics of what you have to assist...

Re: T 5 conversion reverse light help

I'm going to try to provide the info you need to help me.
I do have overdrive, it finally shifts into about 65mph.
Here is a pick of the wires coming out of the trans, they are located right by the shifting lever.
As for a little switch on the column, I really dont see anything except a hazard switch.
My truck shifts from park to reverse, neutral then drive. No low gear.
I'm sorry, I dont know what a converter lock up is. I'll look that up in a minute.
I'm thinking this steering column is out of something different than our trucks.
Guide me as to where I should point my camera!!

Re: T 5 conversion reverse light help

Here is one from the side.
Then one of the outside. The reason of my motivation!!
I really appreciate you replying.
I had put the reverse lights in thinking yeah, just add bulbs!
Nope. And after doing other little things here and there I realize that there has been a lot of random mechanic-ing in 47 years.

Re: T 5 conversion reverse light help

The 2 green wires in the pic of the column under the dash are your reverse lights. Run 2 wires from the switch on the side of the T5 to that plug. Unplug the plug and use male spade connectors and plug wires into the plug. Then you have reverse lights, Without cutting your plug up.

Thanks Husker, but I guess I stole this thread from the gent with the T5.
I have a column shift automatic.
Phase_one, please forgive me!

Re: T 5 conversion reverse light help

not sure on 200R4 but if the plug shown on the side of the trans pictured is a neutral safety switch or not. Get a meter on ohms and someone to shift while you are checking continuity. start with the wires on left side of plug clip your leads on then shift out of Park and if you lose continuity and you have a circuit again in neutral and lose it when in any gear that would be the neutral safety side. If the neutral safety switch is located in the trans. If it uses other wires check till you get the right 2. But looks like it is left upper and lower. The green wire is probably reverse light.
If it is the NSS you will need to take the Purple wire from the Ignition switch out of the plug run 2 wires preferrebly the same colors as what the NSS used (purple and yellow) run to the plug on trans and back up under dash use a male spade connector to plug one to the purple other to switch where purple used to be. be sure to insulate with some shrink tubing or tape. This way you don't have to cut any wires.
The other side if it is reverse lights you will have a circuit only in reverse. then you use the 2 green wire like in previous post to wire them up . Hope this makes sense.

Re: T 5 conversion reverse light help

Yes sir it makes since. It just make me wish I had more experience.
I screenshot this and will do my best just as soon as I complete my current step.
Wheel refinishing. Super easy in comparison in my mind.

200R4 plug on side of trans has nothing to do with Neutral Start....
Neutral start switch was always on the shifter itself...
Usually in the console....

The plug on the side of the trans is the 4 wire circuit needed for 4th gear signalling and lockup convertor functions only....its should be wired through both a vacuum switch and a normally open switch...vacuum switch releases lockup under acceleration and normally open switch prevents lockup until 4th gear circuit is closed....

The truck starting in gear tells me there is no Neutral start switch in the system...Question...is there a switch on the shifter mechanism inside the console?
