Oil filter Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I recently Id'd my engine and it turns out to be a '76 305. I have been using an oil filter for a 69 307, which is twice as long as the filter reccomended for the 305. Could this have caused any problems or damage to the block ie reduction in oil pressure etc.....what do you guys think?

Nope, your fine. Alot of guys change to bigger filters. As long as the oil was topped off.

i use a 3 ton oil filter which is about a foot long, better filtering a possibly a little better oil cooling. If it fits then bigger is better. Big filter is Fram ph373

I use the shorter filter on my truck, but they're interchangable.

This is a GREAT filter. It holds 2 quarts of oil. I've been using it for many years. I have only one complaint....it costs about twice as much as the one quart filter.

are you guys really putting fram filters on your trucks? They are the absolute worst filters on the market. Not opinion here.... fact.

Yes FRAM = Death and Destruction to an engine!!!! It's the only filter that I know of that WILL VOID Factory Warranty on new Dodge and Chevrolet autos!!

The dealer will tell you that, however, if they try pulling that on you, get it in writing.
Fram filed a lawsuit on that and won. If your dealer tells you this, then they are required to supply you a filter at no charge to you.

Fram totally sucks, and the OEMs hate them just as much, but don't let the dealer screw you over.

When I bought my 71 Dart the PO used Fram filters and complained about not having any oil pressure. He switched filters and it solved the problem. I guess the Fram filters are designed to filter really small particles and it greatly reduces oil flow?? That could just be jibberish, but it sounded good! I'll bet Longhorn Man knows.....

I can't explain that part of the equation, i have heard it before though.
Fram simply doesn't have enough filtering media in it. Think of it as a tin can with 3 kleenex tissues thrown in it.

My engine has over 275,000 miles....all with Fram oil filters and still has a compression of 150, runs great, and the engine has NEVER been opened up. You can’t knock success! Rumors, rumers, rumers....I don’t believe them. Show me proof.

I was always a Fram user until I was enlightened. I was SHOCKED when I saw the info on this website.

The info on the above site is geared to Mopar, but the analysis will be the same regardless of the car/truck.

Not all Fram filters are turds. The Fram Tough Guard was rated good, but with the really poor performance of the other Fram models, I'd still stay away.

dealer filters are the best, i have had 2 filters colapse on the inside in high horsepower engines about 10 years ago, since then they seem to be working and i do check them. John Force wouldnt stear us wrong, would he?

ive ben useing the fram ph5 and ph8 for 9 yeaers on multiple trucks and motors and never had a problem.

i have had a filter get slapped by a hedder and wear a hole in it but it was a tight fit and then it got bent wheelin.

all I'll say is this.. go get a napa gold filter (P/N 1060) which is nothing but a rebadged Wix filter, and cut it open... then cut open your beloved fram, and you will never screw another one onto your motor.
Yes, you can get 275,000 miles with fram filters.... we also got 265,000 miles on the original automatic overdrive in a ford F-150 in a fleet driven truck that had been abused and beaten... totaled 3 times, and only had the fluid chainged once at 95,000 miles. Anything can happen.
however, if you know what you are looking at... and even if you don't know, but just have common sence...crack open the 2 filters and have a look see. Go ahead, spend the 18 bucks to look at them yourself.
As far as John Force... even the Rolling Stones sold out. Money talks.

delco filters aren't bad either. should be a 1218 (1qt) or 932(2qt).

carquest's good filters are also made by wix.

Me I use wix or delco filters, which ever is in stock when I go and buy but usually delco. my dad was a devote fram guy to. Me I always prefered oe. Yah I run the big filters on my truck to. Seems to do better with them. Bigger filter= more oil= happy engine!

delco has 2 lines... one is kinda low on the totum pole... not Fram low, but it is down there. The other is way up high like the Wix filters.

Does anyone remember when...you could buy a kit for the ol 265 change the oil and install a roll of bathroom paper for an oil filter? Had a uncle that did that for his '54 chevy for years. Must not have hurt anything I believe he got 180-200,000 miles on that old car. Ohh yeah he also used to flush the engine with kersone both oil pan & pour it down the carb reving the crap out of it to keep it from dying to clean the carb..Amazing how far we have come huh?? Gas wars @ .23 plus you got a free coffee cup & a saucer & SS Stamps too!
