Re: Help me make a hard descision

If someone offered me a Vw for my truck I would ask them "should I slap you now or later"? I dont care how great of mileage it gets or how shiny. I rather drive my old beat up American made truck that I have to fill up gas every second. Sell the dodge and get a honda if you have to get a better gas mileage vehicle.

Re: Help me make a hard descision

NO WAY! That truck is worth waaaay more. We bought my wife a "cute" '00 VW new beetle and she loved the heated leather seats. It was slightly faster than a driving lawnmower (2.0 gas non-turbo) and puked a tstat at 30k miles. I traded it in after 6 months for a Mustang GT. Keep the '70 truck, Trade him the Dodge, That would be a fair trade. Just my opinion anyway... Later

Re: Help me make a hard descision

Don't do it I have a friend who has worked for niello vw for ten years and said their cars are junk. You must stay on top of maintenance and repair are very expensive. He also said that he can't believe how they try to gear their sales more towards younger people who are usually going to college and cant afford repairs. When the warranty runs out get rid of the car

Re: Help me make a hard descision

I'll be the contrarian here, and under the condition that you are confident that value-wise you are ahead of the game, I'd rather have the Jetta as a daily car than the truck. Again, I have no idea of values, and you might be better off selling the truck for cash and buying the vehicle you want.

Never had a VW, but I think the Jettas are nice cars... at least the ones I've seen. One thing to be cautious of is repair costs. I have an Audi S8 V10 that shares a lot of parts with VW, but mine was "Certified Pre Owned" which gave me 6 or 7 years of warranty. Never given me a spot of trouble until last month I thought the diff felt weird, had it checked, and they had to replace it. I bet without warranty it would have been over $10K.

So, to summarize, I'd rather drive a Jetta. But I wouldn't want to pay to repair one, and have no idea what the value is like vs your truck.

Regardless, whatever you do, trades are tricky. If the guy has and can prove clear title, great, but no matter who he is don't trade for something with ANYONE else's name or company on the title even backed by their "word" by "Oh year, that's taken care of, I paid that off, etc".

Re: Help me make a hard descision

you will see your wallet get emptier everytime something goes wrong with the jetta when it comes to the cost of parts compared to the truck.

I see VW owners spending $$$ just to keep thier vehicles on the road. I just picked up a S15

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=521608

and FYI you have a similar truck in you neck of the woods

http://littlerock.craigslist.org/cto/2988131417.html

It says it needs brake work 15.00 reman master cylinder, then you can grab drums/rotors off of Camaro/Firebird (1982-1992)mailbu, el camino, monte carlo, regal, (82-87). Shoes are 18.99 new if needed, calipers 13.99.

An old S10 would be a good option. The Jetta.....not so much, keep your '70.

I do agree, My neighbor has had a few and each one has major problems

also I would be worried about payments like that, usually causes problems and confusion. also your truck if you like it that much why get rid of it. if it was me I would sale the dodge lol. just my opinion

Re: Help me make a hard descision

Let's see, the last Jetta I had (2001) went through four power window regulators in less than 5 months, at 421.00 a pop installed. I was lucky in that the driver's door went twice while still under warranty. It had the V6 as well, which ate coil packs like no tomorrow.

Prior to 2000 they were great cars.

Re: Help me make a hard descision

I've already posted here but thought I would throw this in the mix. While no one Want's to get in a wreck.. I recently wrecked my 72 Blazer :-( I hit some jack --- at about 55mph. He turned right in front of me. I was pissed---but 7" lift and 36" swampers and and not a scratch on me. (wanted to put a few on him) Any way try that in a VW !!(or not) Insurance gave me the truck and $3500 and I will save her and fix the frame. Can't do that with a VW either I bet..

If you trade that truck for something let it be another c/10!
Just sayin.

You may not be a 2 wheel guy but you can pickup a small scooter or cycle for cheap transportation and drive the C10 occasionally. Hard to beat the mpg of a bike.

Re: Help me make a hard descision

Mike,

If you paid attention in that technical school your lack of money is temporary, right?

If you run out of money before the end of the week/month, get another job. That's right - you can work two. Or three.

Keep the truck.

Re: Help me make a hard descision

if you are thinking of selling or trading a 67-72 truck, this is probably the last place to come for advice. everyone here loves these trucks and it would take an act of god to get most of this forum to part with their trucks. here is my honest opinion. is keeping that truck causing you financial problems? are the problems big enough to put stress on your life or stress on other family? if so, will trading for the vw help relieve those stresses? and how much? also, is it short term stress relief? meaning, is this just a quick fix to a short term issue. if money is going to be better soon and you love your truck, then maybe there are some other things laying around you can sell for some cash.

I hate to break it to you but a new car won't make your job any better. Instead of shopping for a car why not shop for a job? I am serious, if you want better things in life you have to figure out a way to get them. And by better things I don't mean new cars.
