Just wondering...is there a regular spot GM placed a compass when ordered from the dealer? I know that Suburbans have a different shape interior roof (for more headroom?) than the pick ups...and I think there is a little more metal showing above the rearview mirror/visors as well (the area shown in picture)...but I haven't been able to figure out what caused this square void in the paint with a hole and what that phillips head screw is for (the lower screw)? A compass maybe? Thanks if you know!

Okay...Thanks! I guess the phillips head screw and paint void are still a mystery for me to solve? I really like that compass, though!

Here are the GM instructions. I found these pics on the forum, but I have no idea where.

Good info ... thats right. It uses adhesive vs a suction cup.

Here ya go, Woody, some pix of when I had my GM compass mounted on the dash, center of my GMC Jimmy. The Magellen GPS is to its left. [I have since dismounted my compass, as it leaked oil.]
I used a brass screw and nut, as they are non-ferrous.
Also not a good mounting point, if there is a dash speaker below, which has huge magnets.

Re: Period Correct Accessaries for your truck...

Here is how mounted my non-GM vintage compass. Problem is that it always shows south. (Parrothead compass) It works fine outside of the truck. Since this photo was taken I installed a 1 1/2" plastic spacer and a brass mounting screw with no improvement
I know that compasses can lose their MOJO over time or the roof has become magnetized. Hopefully someday I can find an accurate replacement. I like having a compass.

Yeah. Mine was acting screwy too. That's why I pulled it. I thought it was the lack of mineral oil in the case.
There are magnetic adjusters you can tweak to realign, but if the whole instrument is way off, then you're out of luck.
I wish I'd bought a small [2-3/8''] general aviation magnetic compass instrument when they were affordable, but so what.

If you say it works outside the truck, then you might try a dash mount, rather than shielding it under the cab roof.

I have a later version of that hand held spot. It's built around an H4 halogen rectangular driving light. I need to find a good H4 bulb. They used to be everywhere -- common inside fog lights and driving lights. Now with LEDs being the neatest thing since sliced bread, H4 tech is harder to support.
