Doughnut behind the seat (rear mount tank)

Anyone running a large rear mount fuel tank figure out a spare tire mount? I just had a lightbulb: build a mount for a small doughnut behind the bench seat in the cab. I cant imagine a fullsize spare fitting behind the seat, but then again I have never seen a 5x5 doughnut, either. The idea would be to limp the truck up to 50 miles to have the damaged tire repaired.

I want to eventually take the truck on long road trips; driving around town isnt much of a concern. I am running a Boyd's custom 20 gal EFI cell. It mounts high and takes up a great deal of space.

Knowing you guys, I figure there must be some trick ideas.

I don't think Ma Chevy thought about donuts in 67-72 trucks. They really needed a good cop on the payroll.

Why not a full size spare in the bed? I don't think a donut is a great idea on our trucks. If you are running a billet wheel or something, you can make a mount in the bed with locks to protect from theft, etc. Even a cover like they use on jeeps and other offroad: vehicles.

Re: Doughnut behind the seat (rear mount tank)

The full size in the bed is my current solution, but I'd like something a little more permanent (mine is just sitting). I also use my truck to haul somewhat regularly and I dont want it taking up space.

I'm going to give the doughnut idea a shot (thanks for the Craigslist links!) and let you know how it works out. I agree that its not the best idea, but it sure beats being stranded in the middle of no where with no cell service

Re: Doughnut behind the seat (rear mount tank)

I would do some serious measuring first, or even make a mock up doughnut...not sure it would fit and you would still be able to sit comfortably in the seat.

The 5x5 doughnut I am picking up is $10, which is worth less to me than the hour or so for mock up

Re: Doughnut behind the seat (rear mount tank)

This has been discussed in the past and there may even be some guys that have done it. I have a donut that I got for the same purpose several years ago. The truck I was going to use it in is in pieces but I did try it on my 68 GMC with 15 inch six lug wheels and it looked like it would work well in an emergency.

Only problem is I don't know what truck it came out of. I suspect it was a Toyota but not sure.

Re: Doughnut behind the seat (rear mount tank)

Astro/Safari vans run the 5 on 5 pattern, so there is a space-saver spare for behind the seat. Any kind of fullsize spare is not going to fit without having the seat in a forward adjustment setting, as we all know if your a fullsize guy that will not work out.

Has anyone done this?
Does it fit behind the seat?

Definitely an idea. I am a huge fan of back up plans and that includes a spare.

If I ever move my tank to the rear, it will be for the sole reason of giving me some more tool/rifle space.

Why bother ? Call AAA it pays to have the extra towing coverage if you ever need it and if your on a road trip or out in the boonies toss a spare in the bed , you know that big old square box they made to carry stuff with you ? .
