starter wiring question ??

Small wire that goes to solenoid that engages starter on my truck must be broken somewhere in the harness, I can engage starter by jumping with screwdriver but turn ignition and nothing but lights, starter won’t engage with key. I need to run another small wire to starter, anyone know where this wire runs thru firewall ??

Re: starter wiring question ??

Did you check your neutral safety switch?
That might be your source of no power.

Re: starter wiring question ??

Checked wires all are solid to firewall. hooked another neutral switch and still no start unless you cross fire on starter with screwdriver. Acts like bad neutral switch but it’s not. 86 Silverado with tilt wheel.

Re: starter wiring question ??

Back-probe the terminals coming out of the ignition switch. This will tell you definitively whether the problem is in the switch or the wiring. Physically getting to that switch will be the challenging part. I don't know anything about the tilt columns.

Re: starter wiring question ??

A broken tooth on the sector gear inside the steering column will also cause that symptom. As will a bad ignition switch.

Won't a bad solenoid do that, also? I not sure.

Re: starter wiring question ??

i have seen the master power switch on top of the steering column get out of adjustment just to the point all works except the starter power feed in crank .

otherwise its yellow wire before safety switch then purple out of the switch to the starter .

Re: starter wiring question ??

i got pissed and left it alone for awhile and without touching anything I thought I’d hit starter and all of a sudden it starts. I rigged me a bypass starter button so I wouldn’t get stranded until I get it figured out. Next gonna pull column and check switch on top of column. Thank all
