1989 burb TRANS SWAP

alright gents,
I am soon to be embarking on the great challenge of swapping out my old 700R4, for a 4L80E. So I have few questions for yall regarding the best options for me, parts wise.

1. should I buy a used trans or purchase a jakes performance stage 2 4L80E.
If I buy a jakes performance trans ill be getting reliability, but at the added cost. I am leaning towards this trans as it seems it may save me alot of headache.

2. Is the NP205 the best transfer case option for me?
I have seen them on cragislist completely refurbished with 4l80e conversion kit. Its cost 1400$ which seems exspensive to me.

3. whats the best high stall torque converter.
Ive been looking at TCI streetfighters, but Ive also heard TCI is not a reliable brand.

thats all I got for now, thanks for reading/responding!

If you got the money buy the jakes performance one just let them know what t case your gonna run.The np205 is one of the strongest t case made has a huge aftermarket. What t case to run depends your tire size and how you will use the truck.

Re: 1989 burb TRANS SWAP

its just going to be a cruiser I'd say, burn a little rubber every now and then. beat on it a little bit. some moderate off road usage. weekend warrior I guess. If I ever get tired of driving a suburban around Id like to be able to pull out the drivetrain and stuff it into a muscle car.

With a np205 you can twin stick it,That will let you shift each axle independently which means you have high low and neutral for the front and rear its kinda nice when you get in a tight spot and let the front pull it around.

Re: 1989 burb TRANS SWAP

The 205 is the strongest one out there that was a factory item, and if your running big tires or a 454 I would go with this one.

If you just want to cruise dirt roads, and have 4x4 to keep from getting stuck. A np208 is a good option.

Do not get a 203 since it is full time 4x4 unless you plan to make a doubler out of it with a 205.

There is a 241 I think is the number if you want to flip a switch into 4x4. I am look at that one since I want a 4l65E in my truck eventually.

Re: 1989 burb TRANS SWAP

i would stick with the 241 that came stock in the burb. unless there is some overwhelming concern with smacking the case on a rock. as far as strength goes, it has plenty. the aluminum cases dont like impact though. and it will be easy to make work with the 4l80.

if you have the budget, go with the better trans.

i would re consider a high stall. they are generally a pain in the b-hole for anything less than a dragster. i have a hughes converter in my old clunker and it has been great. not many miles since it went in, but so far so good.

Re: 1989 burb TRANS SWAP

I want to use a pretty bulletproof tcase and as far as I know the np205 would be the best option for me. Ill look into the tcase I already have Ive sorted overlooked it. I wasnt sure on a high stall torque converter, I was thinking maybe a street version with about a 2000 rpm stall.
