clutch vibration issues

Hey all, I have been fighting vibration engaging my clutch in my c10 for a long time. I have a crate 350, t5 tranny, stock flywheel and stock clutch kit for the 1993 WC from an s10. Here is what I have done:

Installed two different t5s - not t5 issue
Purchased a new flywheel
Purchased a new clutch kit
Drove for a maybe 2k miles to try to get some wear indications.

Ideally the only thing I can think of and that hasn’t been replaced yet is the stock bell housing from the original Saginaw tranny. My other thought is maybe I bent something installing the t5 around my x pipe exhaust. But the wear definitely suggests that I am not having flush clutch engagement.

I also have replaced all the small parts in the bell housing and clutch fork along with hemispherical joint rods from lmc. Any help is much appreciated as this is the 3-4th time dropping the tranny. That 700r4 is starting to look really tempting now. Lol

Re: clutch vibration issues

The heat checking and wear marks on the flywheel and plate indicate uneven finger movement.
Post a pic of your fork with the throw out bearing attached to it.

Re: clutch vibration issues

If you have the stock truck bell housing, the center hole for a truck may be bigger than the bearing retainer on you "new" transmissions, causing misalignment problems. I think the car centering hole on the bell housing is 4.68is and the truck is 5.125. Might verify you have this correct. There are places to buy a centering ring if you have the large BH and need the smaller opening.

I would also check the pilot bearing. Also on aftermarket trans installs the suppliers all recommend dial indicating the bell housing to make sure its centered.

I have never felt so stupid and relieved at the same time. Thanks and great call out. I need to see what my options are as I still use the zbar mount off the bell housing.

Re: clutch vibration issues

I had this with a Saginaw three speed not fitting in my 54 Chevy bell housing and got a bearing retainer that fit, but never though a straight six 250 c10 was used the larger diameter. Thanks so much!

Re: clutch vibration issues

Hey guys quick follow up question while I waiting for my ring insert. Why would this be an issue in the first place. With the tranny bolting up the the bellhousing I think it would be centered wouldn’t it?

Re: clutch vibration issues

Don't feel bad, back when I was young, I would swap motors, bell housings and trannies in my Camaros & truck, seems like once a month. Just grab a bell housing that fit the flywheel size and slap it together. Probably why I would have terrible "clutch problems" every once in a while. Never knew about the bell hole till way later, would have saved a lot of money and time. You should put a new pilot bearing in while its apart, might have gotten wallowed out. Glad you found the issue.

Re: clutch vibration issues

Not sure if you found your answer or not, but I had an old Ford Sedan with a three on the tree. I forever had a clutch chatter that would rattle your teeth. Turns out, the throwout bearing was a bit larger in diameter than the sleeve it would run on. So the bearing was chattering on the sleeve as it was being engaged. If that makes sense. LOL

It would likely be close.
Your marks on the flywheel and disc suggest higher fingers on one side of the pressure plate. Poor quality pressure plate or tob being slightly cocked in the fork can cause that too.
Give us a pic of your fork where the tob fits onto it.
Might be a clue there.
