looking to buy my first one.

I'm new to the forum. Names Jon, currently driving an 04 Dodge SRT4. Black, stage 2, borla exhaust, stage 3 front mount. Putting down like 265 to the wheels. Live in Minnesota.

ANYWAYS!!!
I was Gunna go look at a 72 C10 with 4x4. It needs an engine and Tranny. Guy wants like 1000 bucks for it. Apparently he has a plow for it too. I can post pictures when I go look at it. Basically I was wondering if there was anything else I should look for? Any TREX back would be helpful. I dont know much about these trucks. Read basic history but thats as good as it gets.

Re: looking to buy my first one.

Welcome Jon, Since your from MN I would guess theres some or a lot of rust. Also since its been a plow truck I'm sure its been wet a little. lol. I would look at the cab mounts and cowl area. Also the roof drip rail. Inside above the windshield also. If it needs rockers and cab corners that wouldn't be too bad but i would guess it needs kick panels an floor patches too. I say this as I bought a truck from MN and did some floor, mount support work and rocker too. If you really want a nice truck without a lot of rust your almost always going to have to travel south or west. Or get it shipped. I had a cab come from AZ and I'm glad I did. Well worth it. post some pics and let us know what it looks like. Btw you might see your thread moved to General Discussion or somewhere else since its in the build thread category. Good luck! Chuck.

I think it would be worth your while to check out trucks in the areas that the weather is kind to these trucks. Repairing rust is a chore to say the least.

I know a guy who has a 1969 GMC 3/4 ton LWB Fleetside in Oregon that is rust free. It's been sitting for a couple of years, has a 350 crate engine with a 4spd. I believe he only wants $1300 for it. If you are interested, PM me and I'll give you his phone number.

If you want a 4x4, check the classifieds here or in the CA, AZ, OR, NV Craigslist.

Re: looking to buy my first one.

Welcome from mn as well..agree with above...I love these trucks, check out my name and my pics and albums..having said that..definately go and check the truck out,it sounds more like parts and being from mn (rust).also being a plow truck(most are abused, badly).be careful (needs motor,tranny)...winter is almost here and these plow trucks will be coming out of woodwork...we are in the worst financial mess ever...$1000,could get you a lot more truck..look down south.....good luck...

I'm with thelonerife on this one. When buying a 4x4 - especially in MN - I always look to make sure that it didn't have a plow attached. And I plow with my truck. However there is a big difference between pushing the snow off your driveway and working a truck on commercial accounts.

Look for rust in the usual spots. Rockers and cab corners WILL rust out. Even desert SW trucks, when brought to MN will rust there because there is no paint between the panels. The only way to keep a rust free rocker from rusting out in MN is to coat it throught the access hole in the front of the rocker.

If you pull back the rubber around the windshield on the inside of the cab at one or both corners and see rust - don't buy the truck.

Speaking of plows, it is about time for me to go fetch my plow out of the weeds.
