I Just Got Beat By A '94-98 Cobra!!

I know this probably doesn't belong here (not my truck but '99 Trans Am), but here goes anyway!

On the way back to work from lunch, I was on the freeway doing the speedlimit of 65 and saw behind me a Cobra coming up fast. I was in the second to left lane of 4 lanes, and he was a ways behind me. I knew exactly what he was going to do, come up fast behind me and whip left into the fast lane and keep going. So I punched it, shifted into D and whipped left myself. He followed me hot on my tail with his initial faster speed. A couple seconds later at 110mph, he was right behind me. I really didn't want this lunch hour to end in long-time regret and fees, so I got out of it at about 115 and he promptly whipped right and passed me and kept going a bit before slowing back to normal speed himself.

I now am wondering if I should have stayed in it longer. Should I have risked getting a ticket? For what? What would you guys have done? It's times like this that make me wonder why I obsess so much about cars and motors and all....

I wouldn't worry about a ticket. My main concern is for others safety!! Doing almost 2X more than the posted speed doesn't give you more than a second to react if a family was minding their own business and entered your lane. Let's keep racing on the tracks and off the streets, Thanks, Don.

Yep......too much risk......eventualy someone will get hurt or loose their life. Its ok for you to take the risk, but what abour the rest of the people using the road along with you

You know, the other guys are right in what they said, and maybe I'm just younger(22)and not as experienced, but I would have stayed in it until traffic slowed me down, or the other person gave in.

I would not necessarily say that you got beat. If you let off then he is obviously gonna pass you. Plus he had more speed in the beginning anyways. I think you could win though.

10 years ago I would have done the same...heck I did it five years ago....got a ticket (yes a ticket no jail time) for 115 in a 55mph zone.

I don't do those things anymore (yeah right)...for the most part....it's not worth the money, headache (if you get a ticket) and risk...I like my toys, life and freedom...and health...too much to risk it over sillyness like that.

If you ever see a dead baby in a car wreck caused by foolish speeding like that and you'd never consider it again.

Worst tragedy I've ever witnessed was caused by a similar deal. Dumb kids in a Mustang.....

not that I support street racing but......stock for stock, top speed on the T/A is higher. It's not necessarily that the 'Stang is power limited but it pushes more air. The T/A has a better aero design.

The Cobra is proably going to take you over 100mph no matter what. These trucks have very poor aerodynamics, and the cobra has pretty good aerodynamics. These trucks are good off the line though

Crap i just re-read your post....

That Cobra proably wasn't stock. Most of the naturally aspirated Cobras were still in the 14 second 1/4 mile range. If yout TA has a LS1, it should run much faster than that.

And no, its not worth risking a ticket, your life, and the life of others to show up a stang. Especially at triple digit speeds. Going that fast for a long period of time is just begging for an accident to happen.

you guys were pushing well over 100mph and still climbing, unless your cars have been lowerd and the fenders vented out one of you was gonna start floating and lose it,which means a huge pile up.

my two bits.

not condoning racing on the street, I have in the past and have seen the better part of 140 mph in older heavier cars, and have seen a person missing his head after a roll over so its much safer on the track the on the street.

more info

The whole deal only lasted max 10 seconds. We were BOTH still accelerating when I let off. It was a definate decision in my mind: racing, look back in rear view mirror "Yep, he's still with me"-110, look back-still right on my tail, 115 "That's fast enough for me" and it was over. I wasn't going to go any faster than that. So I gave him the win and backed out of the risky situation.

That's not gonna happen at those speeds.

I've had my C5 to 165, it wasn't any different than 65.

I try to stay sane in cages now, when I go fast now, it's on my Blackbird, I've had it to 178 a couple times.

It gives you a new perspective on life....

Since I commute riding a motorcycle almost everyday it's stunts like this that really don't set well. Things can turn bad fast enough at normal speed without all the highspeed antics.

never know what the driver of that other car has on his shirt. one night i was driving down a dark road and came up on a black '99 SS Camaro. he was doing the speed limit, and i passed him on the left. as i did he punched it, so that i couldnt pass. i stepped into it a little more as we approached a stoplight. the windows were tinted, and it was dark so i couldnt see much but the driver kept egging me on at the light. i was ready to take him ( ok, i was willing to give it my best shot ) just before the light turned green a car approaching from the left turned right, and in his headlights i could see the glimmer of a badge pinned to the Camaro drivers shirt. talk about a close one...

You should have kept going. Kinda hard for the cops to catch you when you pass em at 130+mph. Besides, it was on the freeway. Those are ment to be driven fast on. Heck, 80mph is the norm around here.

I know most of the replies to this post were anti-street racing, but I found a website last night that has pretty good videos of some Nor-Cal street racing. Even if you don't condone it, you probably wouldn't mind watching...

They are huge files though, one is 37MB, but the footage is decent. Mostly imports racing and the occasional muscle car.

http://www.samuraifiles.com

You have to register in order to download the vids, but everything is free.
