Re: Hood insulation

I think under hood insulation prolly needs to be something that will withstand heat and be compatable with petroleum products, degreasers and the like. I have seen a few guys who have used the hot water tank insulation kits on the underside of their hoods but mostly those were newer trucks that have the sub structure under there so the insulation was held on with the plastic push pins. newer vehicles use the formed fiberglass stuffbut you won't find anything thats gonna fit a classic hood. are you trying for sound insulation, heat, simply to cover the underside or some other reason?

Sound insulation. Just wondering if people do it. I remember cars at one time had some sort of black fabric

Re: Hood insulation

any model cars / trucks with black fabric type insulation were mostly on units where the hood was really close to the engine thus got really hot really fast. this saved the paint job and burned hands etc. But in doing so they trapped more heat and sacrificed the cooling factor. you will be trapping more heat in the engine bay.
Since most of the stovebolts had high head room and plenty of moving air you would be doing it for other reasons.

Modern cooler running engines and better airflow you see less models with the fabric.

So should you, would you, could you?
totally up to you and what your overall design is for your truck.

Re: Hood insulation

It isn't inexpensive but i'd look into Lizard Skin https://lizardskin.com/ That would be spray / roll on that looks pretty much like bedliner when it is on.

I think it’s a good question and thought. I was kind of thinking the same things about sound pad on hood and wondering what people use.
I ended up using about 5 gallons of this stuff to coat the entire inside of the cab and underside of the cab and also the inside of all four fenders:

https://www.secondskinaudio.com/soun...pectrum-liquid

I really like the way it sprayed on. I bought the sprayer that comes with it.
Turns out, I accidentally hit “two” when I ordered it and I got another 5 gallons. I didn’t think I needed.
I’m going to use some of that on the other side of the hood once I’m sure it’s straight and bodyworked. Website says good to 400° and they’ll be tons of room because my engine is way down in the bay. It is like black rubber. Makes the metal panels sound like a dull thump so it will help with sound mainly but also heat I guess?
