Help with loose sm465 shifter

Got bored went out and pulled the shifter out to see if anything was wrong because it just feels VERY sloppy... First off I want everyone to know that I have NEVER been in a sm465 trans EVER. I dont know anything about them so please be gentle if I ask something stupid. As soon as I pulled the boot I started seeing stuff wrong.... Looks like one of the lock pins is gone and somone put a roll pin in its place. Then looks like someone else put a hose clamp on it to keep the pin in.. Does anyone know where I can get these pins for the case? To replace the loose roll pin. SO I pulled the shifter.. Looks like someone welded the handle to correct something? or is that factory.. Also on the lower part of the shifter, the part that goes in the end is held on by a roll pin. It fits very loose. Also the hole in the shifter itself that the pin hose through is bigger then the pin itself so this may be why its so loose. If this is the case, the shifter is garbage.. And if it is, would there be any reason why I couldnt just weld the part that fits in the end to the handle so it wont move? Atleast till I find a new shifter. With the shifter like it is and the sensitive steering its kind of a scary ride haha.

Re: Help with loose sm465 shifter

My drivetrain guy told me that SM465s shifters rattle (are loose, side to side). If you weld the shifter to attempt to stiffen it, then the shifter will rattle all the time. I have a loose shifter and it makes some mechanics think it is broken. As long as the shifter works and I don't miss any gears when shifting I am satisfied. I think SM465s are very old technology, which is why enthusiasts upgrade to later model transmissions, but I have a work truck so this does not interest me. As long as I keep the clutch adjusted my old SM465 works like a dream.

Re: Help with loose sm465 shifter

looks like the top is ok but how about the bottom part? its real loose. Can I just weld it solid? I dont care if it rattles. I'd rather it make noise and be a little more solid.

Re: Help with loose sm465 shifter

Yes - you can weld it up and make it solid. It will just rattle and transmit all the vibration up through it.

Originally, there was a rubber isolator in the base of the shifter (retained by the lower roll pin that you see). Welding it up just short circuits that rubber isolator (if there is any left).

Re: Help with loose sm465 shifter

FIXED!!! SO much better now. went from 10in of flop in gear to just 3. I could correct that with some new tighter fitting pins.

I think there were a couple different styles, IIRC.

One style with two o rings; a second style with a rectangular sleeve that fills the void.

About every two years we would go through a project to tighten that shifter up, having a library of test pieces made with different rubber, vinyl, polyurethane, solid, etc. Usually in the end we'd just go back to whatever we already had....

Re: Help with loose sm465 shifter

That clamp is intersting! I believe there is a grub screw on each side that acts as the retainer. I can only assume that one stripped out so they held it in that way.
