Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Nice Nice build. Your craftsmanship is amazing. This is going to be one wicked truck. What year CJ5 is that and what motor do you have in it? Thanks

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Thanks lower50's, we appreciate that!

The jeep is a 73 that we've been working on for over 20 some years...the current drivetrain is a fairly modified Ramjet 502/Turbo400/203-205 set-up. We don't make the time to take it out much anymore...kind of a shame. We've been thinking about selling/trading it off, but it's hard when you've had something that long.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Had a rear driveshaft made this week...kinda long at about 70". We went with a 4" shaft to provide a greater rpm rating for that length.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Thanks Kim!

Not much to add, been busy with life I guess. The boy and I spent some time on the pass door, new bushings/pins and got it fairly close to where we want it...gonna need a bit of perimeter trimming though. We've also been playing around with a visor...not too sure about it, but it's growing on us.

I think the visor will look more in place with a windshield in there. I like the look. When is the cab and front clip scheduled to get shot?

Keep up the good work.

Yea, it'll come together...I've looked at them enough to know we'll like it. It needs some dimples of course...I've got some 2 1/2" and 3" dimple dies on order for it. No real schedule for paint...still have more metal work, but we're anxious.

Cool! The first vehicle my parents bought new together was a 67 CJ5...they still have it. We grew up exploring the desert along the Colorado in SoCal and into Mexico as kids in the back seat of that jeep. I rebuilt it for them a few years ago, kinda a somewhat street legal crawler of sorts...CRD60s, SM420, Atlas, F.I. 231 V6...removeable rear fenders have kept the popo at bay so far around town. Pics of their jeep...

That's a sweet jeep with some nice history to it! Nice work on it too!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Thanks DW!

The 2 1/2" and 3" dimple dies came in on Saturday, can't say enough good things about Barbed Wire Off Road http://www.shop.barbedwireoffroad.com/

...they made the 3" die the same day I called and had them on my doorstep 2 days later.

We had to work around a center brace on the visor...drilling out the spot welds and pulling the brace to dimple the middle. Popped a center hole and a few more spot weld holes in the brace and welded/smoothed it back in.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

We picked up a new pump/valve assembly (10 gpm) that should raise the bed in about 15-20 secs...made a simple mount to bolt it to the inside of the frame. Clamped it about where it's going to sit...gonna try and get a PTO to pump driveshaft made tomorrow before everybody closes down for the 4th.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Nice work on the mount. The large hole looks to be a slip fit over the flange on the pump. Did you machine the hole? Looks too precise for a hole saw. And as I mentioned before, great welds! Could look at them for minutes at a time.

Thanks AD!! I wish we had lathe/mill capabilities, but alas, just grinders, torch, welder, and holesaws...just took my time with it.

Thank you Kim, that means a lot to us!

Additionally, since I don't have any other place to really post this kind of stuff up at...my boy was able to sell the Roadrunner last week for about twice what this new project cost...

We're thinking this is a keeper!!
