Starter wiring question

Hi all! I am changing from a manual trans to a T350in a 67 C10.

The stock starter is a 3 bolt one that mounts to the bellhousing, and has the big battery cable coming from the battery, and 2 small studs with 1 wire on each. The new starter came with the trans from a 71 GMC C10. It bolts to the block, and only has 2 posts... The big battery one, and 1 small stud.

Any idea on how to wire this up? Thanks!

Re: Starter wiring question

The small "S" terminal is your start terminal (goes to ignition switch, hot is start) the small "R" terminal is for ballast resistor (points type distributor) if you have electronic ignition you don't need to use this one. If you do, this one runs to your coil.

Re: Starter wiring question

It has already been swapped to an HEI distrib, it is spliced into the wiring harness by the firewall from the previous owner. They did some "Odd" wiring! lol I still have to figure out why there is no headlights and tails... The brakes work, but a lot of other wiring is patched and stuff!

Sounds like a mini-starter with only one small post. The purple wire from the key switch would go there and the other post was for the stock points coil to the positive post to give it a full 12 volts for easier starting in cold weather, which we have here in Michigan. If you have an HEI distributor you won't need the second post.

If you still have the old points style ignition then you can put the other wire,
(usually Yellow) on the same post and install a diode in series with the wire to allow you to get the 12 volts during starting and to prevent the coil voltage from feeding back to the starter when the key is on.
