Question Finding my late dad's other truck - 1972 K20 4x4 LWB

Hello everyone, I've decided to attempt to hunt down my father's other old truck. If any of you remember, I posted on the board trying to hunt down his 1968 GMC 4x4 SWB - which I did find, but they refused to sell it.

Long story short, my dad (username here, jeffspower http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/member.php?u=7598) passed away 2 and a half years ago - and these trucks was his thing, and as such, my thing. The 72 is what I learned to drive in, and it was powered by a 500 CI engine from an El Dorado that my mom wrapped around a telephone pole. I grew up with this truck, learned some skills thanks to this truck, and had a ton of great memories with it.

It was sold May 5th, 2010 to I believe some classic car dealer in Omaha. It for sure went to somewhere in Omaha, after that we never kept track of it.

I have very little info on it- all I know is what I got from my dad's sig on this site "'72 K20 500 Cad/TH400/NP205"- all the paperwork was thrown away over 7 years ago. All I got is what I know it had when we had it - a 500 CI engine from a Cadillac, 4x4, mismatched vector-style rims, bondo in the bed on the passenger side rear (and a few more areas if I remember right), right behind the tires, and a grey interior with newer seats. I remember telling him that the grey clashed with the red big time, but he didn't give a ****, haha. It also had a modern radio in it.
EDIT: some info I found from my dad's super old posts. This is all info from 2008, so it may be REALLY out of date now that it's been 7 years since we sold it.
-It has power seats out of a '99 Silverado
-It has a gas tank from a blazer

Would it be possible to call up the relevant authorities and see if it's listed on old tax papers of his? Is that even possible?

Now for pictures - most of them are crowding 10 years old. One of which is a shot we took of the guy leaving with the truck - only able to get the phone number on the trailer, 402-201-57, ending with either 69, 63, or 68, I can't tell.

Good luck dude, I really hope you find it. looks like it was a sweet truck.

My 67 GMC was bought new by my great grandpa. I've had it since 1991. There have been a few times I've considered selling it. I'm so glad now that I still have it. It will be going to one of my sons some day.

I would say its a 63 on the end call all the numbers and see if one gets you to the dealer and see where it leads.

Re: Finding my late dad's other truck - 1972 K20 4x4 LWB

Oh yes, I just remembered - dad swapped the super rusty body off with a '69 body from a C20, if I remember the year correct. So it won't "present" itself as a '72, but it's a hodgepodge of a truck.

I plan on calling the number tomorrow, and calling the few classic dealers in Omaha as well.

Well, the dealers in Omaha that deal with classic cars swear they never had it - so maybe the place that bought/sold it folded. I'm trying to get Microsoft to let me into my dad's email account, I'm sure he kept correspondence with whoever bought it.

Find any pics with the license plate number? Being that you actually owned it, the DMV may release the info for when your dad had it, that would at least get you a VIN #?

Best of luck, I'd want it back too. Nothing like turbines with solid color or conventional two-tone. None better, IMO.

Re: Finding my late dad's other truck - 1972 K20 4x4 LWB

I actually lucked out - the DMV gave me the VIN for the truck! At least, I hope it's the correct one to the correct truck (he had several, haha)

The vin is CKE242J148556. Do you think a Private Investigator would be able to take that and find the owner?

Giving a lil bump. Still trying to find it. If anyone knows someone who can help me with a vin search, that'd be amazing. I've found all my late father's vehicles except this one, and no one will sell back to me.

Howdy, I purchased a car in 1981 that when I bought it, guy said he won it in a poker game and it came with a previously signed title. I gave it to a police friend and he was able to provide me with a phone # and address. I contacted this person and negotiated what I needed to get the paperwork sorted.

Are you sure it went to Omaha? I thought it went to a dealer in Iowa, I know one of their pickup drivers is out of Omaha. They tried to buy one of my trucks after getting your dads Caddy powered truck. Ill do some searching and see if I can come up with the name of the dealer.

Maybe it did. All I remember was something about Omaha, I don't have anything on where it ended up past the dude who picked it up with the 402 area code number on the trailer.

I think I remember you! Rob, right, the one who had the dually 4x4 67-72?

Any luck finding it with the VIN? I need to find one I sold 20 years ago, so am hoping you figure out a way to track it down.

Still looking. Thought a friend in another state had found it by sighting it, but it wasn't the truck. VIN should be CKE242J148556.

Re: Finding my late dad's other truck - 1972 K20 4x4 LWB

Might've gotten a lead to who my dad sold it to - just waiting to hear back. It might've been sold to American Dream Machines of Des Moines, Iowa in May of 2010. Apparently it sold on eBay.

Might have to look into how expensive a private investigator would be to find it.

Man. There used to be an collector car auction tracker website that you could search. Keith Martin maybe? It’s been down for few years but maybe internet archive site?

I sure am sorry that the new owner would not sell you back your father's old truck. I would have DIED if that had happened with me when I found my grandfather and father's old 68 C10. (See the Grandtruck post in my signature for full details)
Did the new owner have it all fixed up?

Now that you have the VIN # will a carfax or autocheck.com not be able to tell you the current owner?

Re: Finding my late dad's other truck - 1972 K20 4x4 LWB

The thing about old vehicles is it could have been sold numerous times over without ever being registered so it could be anywhere in the country or out for that matter. I may be wrong but isn't the vin number too short on these trucks for car fax to search for?
Your best hope for help in tracking it down may be someone in the police department or an insurance office. I would think in these modern times there is a national database of automotive records to search. Since you think you have the vin to search with. Could it be there are some old license registration certificates or insurance certs for the truck in a drawer or some place at your Mom's where they used to keep such things? Maybe an old license plate? Something with correct vehicle description and full vin number, ect.? I have always held onto a few things like that. With correct information someone willing at the DMV could do a title search.
It is/was a good looking truck and I sure hope you find it and can bring it home again.
