what will i find when i pull this head?

other then well worn burnt valves in a worn head and lots of soot from running the engine with the timing @1degree BTC, and a leaky dirty rochester B, no vacuum advance and the heat riser valve flap fell off the shaft, mostly (3/4) blocking the exhaust pipe.
Is this oil a sign of real damage? or just to be expected from a 280,000 miles engine? The head is original , has had 2 valve jobs, the last 80k ago.
I did overheat(needle off the gauge) the engine a few times.Name: DSCF3367b.jpg

Lot of miles on the ol 6....if you ran it hot it could have a cracked head..if your gonna rebuild it id get the block surface ground and get a new head..at the minimum

Re: what will i find when i pull this head?

Now it depends on how much money you want to spend, knowing the engine was overheated a few times which creates issues that you can not see with the naked eye.

Are you pulling the engine or is it already out

Looks like you started to take it apart in the truck, from the pic, but can not be for sure.
So if you are planning to pull the head, the block would need to be decked to make sure its flat and checked for cracks. By the time you remove that head, you could have the engine out on the engine stand to have a better look at things instead of leaning over the fenders scratching the fenders.

Re: what will i find when i pull this head?

The engine is still in the truck. when i do pull it i will have it checked/decked and replace whatever need replacing. I know it will be a major overhaul.

My shop is a soft dirt driveway , so i would rather pull the engine in spring or summer instead of crawling around on the ground in winter.
I have 2 previously purchased head gaskets, i have plenty of time and want to drive the truck a bit this winter before tearing the engine out.

I have been driving the truck on short around town trips and so far there is no water in the oil or oil in the coolant. the truck starts easy and runs ok, no overheating yet.

I still need to do a compression test. I know my numbers will be low, but if i have some compression on all cylinders i will replace the head gasket and drive the truck for a while before over hauling the engine.
I guess i wont know much until i do the comp test and pull the head.

With only 1 degree of advance & a sooty carb I'm quite certain your piston return springs are gonna be toast...

Man, that's a lot of work to go to just for a gag.

Must really get hot in the state you live in. Do you think anything else over heated.

Chris Fix's April 1st 2016 YT video was about Blinker Fluid. Really funny. What I remember is that if you have LEDs or quartz-halogen bulbs in your turn signals, you want to use the Synthetic blinker fluid. If running the stock tungsten filament bulbs, tradional blinker fluid is OK.
