Thanks! Tanks are new and I painted them with primer & Tremclad silver...old tanks were way too rusty.

Gordon,

Who in town did your sand blasting and do you mind me asking what it cost you?

I haven't looked, but it doesn't seem like there are many sand blasters in this town. Enough body shops and used car lots (I would know i work at one) but not much for sand blasting.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

John's Sandblasting on the east side of 75th street around 65 Ave. There are a couple of places that will do it but I went with these guys because they are close to the place I rent a car hauler from.

It cost around $500 in all but they won't do panels of any sort, just thicker steel. I took things back a couple of times because I didn't peel it right down the first time, otherwise it might have been a bit less than that.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Ha yah I know exactly where your talking, across from Osman's Auction... That place has been there for YEARS. I live just south of Capilona Mall so I'm up and down there all the time I'll keep that in mind.

500 was all they charged you, really? I am surprised. Can you suggest the best way to peel it down? did you just pressure wash it or what?

I am wondering what size of garage your have though, for space comparison. looks like a 3 car with a double door and single? I want to tackle a similiar project, jsut not sure if i have the room to store my cab and bod like your have done but retain the working space

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Never mind, I see that your garage is attached to the house and by the looks of your neighborhood your in a 15-20 year old neighborhood like millwoods or North Edmonton some where, so its just a standard double car?

In Ottewell here i have a "over sized" double car so I should have plently of room

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Yup, that's the one. They have a crane there so you can basically get it down to the frame and they can use the crane to lift it off your trailer (I thought it had to be a rolling frame for them to do it) and peel apart everything else to its smallest pieces if you want it blasted really well.

Yes, it's a standard two car garage, a bit of the left stall in the front is cut out for a closet inside the house.

It's tight but I keep moving things around so I have room. You should be fine with your garage.

I'm going to build a wood dolly for the cab once I start working on it so I can pull it off the wall and spin it around to weld it up in the light.

I don't do anything on my front driveway b/c I have a crazy neighbor. He called by-law on me again a few weeks after Christmas and the bylaw officer is like "I don't know really why I'm calling you but your neighbor has called our office again about you...."

So yeah, lots of the little parts & things are either stored in the basement or the garden shed for now.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Thank you for the tips.

Thankfully I got nothing but understanding neighbors around me, as well as a back alley. My neighbor just finished his own project car that his spent the last 3 years working on the drive way. unfortunately I have the steeped drive way on the block and won't crawl underneath a vehicle to check for oil leaks without chocking the wheels let alone work on a project on, so every thing is in the garage.

For sh!ts and giggles i am going to see if i can get my cab in the shed...

Thank you for allowing me to pick your brain sir... I look forward to seeing it around town one day

I was at the machine shop today seeing the progress of my block: the heads turned out very nice but I have two rods that need to be replaced....so I will probably get it back next week now. That's okay, more time to get things ready.

Thanks for the motivation Vernski & inovermyhead, I get demotivated when I think how much more there is to do!

If you thought that Charlie song was funny, watch this one (prowlers aren't funny, but I think this dude is going kill him if he indeed finds him!)

Build's going good man - maybe should'a called it "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a" instead considering the starting point... Glad to see another square body saved though!!! Keep the pics comin'!

haha...that's pretty funny! I was thinking it was about time to change the thread name anyways once I get the motor back from the shop!

Will post more pics Sunday of the cab dolly I made today, just need to get the garage cleaned up and things moved around a bit (was working on finishing some reno's and baseboards today --- very dusty cutting that inside as it's -21'C tonite!)

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

I was at the farm this weekend sandblasting my valley cover as the paint I did a few weeks ago lifted on it.

Here are some pics of my blue truck that a member asked to see the two-tone, it's pretty dusty from sitting but that is better than rusty!

I did this truck in 2002 I think, bought it used and removed the vinyl pinstriping it had, added the bumper cover, roll pan, SS grill inserts, tinted the windows, put in a factory overhead console, made some Rhino tubes for the sides that are just for looks, and added the throttle spacer and K&N filter.

I only drive this once a year or so, I really want to keep this truck forever....I might change it back to OEM stock because I kept everything, but we will see.

The black box cover I'm going to put on my white truck once that truck is repainted.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Here is a few pics of my dad's 1968 Buick LeSabre two-door hard top that I learned how to drive in by going in circles around a field. It has 40,000 original miles on it and it still smells new inside. Full load car with a 350 and an automatic.

It pretty cool cruising in it around town....if I could find a twin of it I would buy it just to hot rod it up just to have one a bit different.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Here's a few pics of my '79 GMC...I bought this last summer do build it over winter, but then got the '87 instead.

I really like this truck, it drives straight and it's pretty solid barring this usual rust holes. I have the original rally wheels for it, I just had a flat right before winter so I had to put on the back spare.

I might fix it up next winter and put my extra 700R in it along with power windows and A/C.

It has a 350 and 3 speed auto in it right now. The previous owner that I bought it from only had it a few months before I bought it. He bought it from the orginal owner that happens to live about 5 minutes away from me!

Anyways, the PO had the mufflers replaced and put in a few Edlebrock chrome goodies under the hood. Anyways, this is a pretty cool truck.

If I ever get the urge though to build a square body crew cab lifted 4x4, I'll have to sell this one regretably because I can`t mooch any MORE ROOM!

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Here are some pics of my cab dolly that I made according to some plans I found last week on the Board --- sorry I don't recall who came up with these plans but if you search "cab dolly" you will find them right away.

Two things I would tweek for a 73 - 87 cab would be to raise the rear of the dolly more so the cab sits more level and the front board needed to be wider than the recommended 38".

Other than that, it rolls around with one person pushing it, it really is an improvement over what I was using before!

I will need to strap the cab to the dolly for safety --- I just haven't done it yet.

Sweet rides!
If you do ever get the urge to sell this truck I want to be the front of the line to buy it! I love those square long boxes!

Buy the way there is a square body crew for sale on out on Highway 14, its on the intersection of 14 and 833 almost out by Tofield. Not sure what the fela wants for it but it looks to be in good shape and its sat there for a couple of years now.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Time to get back on this. Finally got my motor back from Prostock. That's my brother Joe helping me today.

Had the Heads worked on (honed), new Comp cam 54-452-11, beehive springs, couple valves, oil pump, rods, rings, bearings, etc etc.

Long story short, putting it back together now and going to drop it in as soon as I can.

Put in my fuel senders and intank pumps as well today (trying to get rid of some boxes laying around by actually installing parts!)

Only thing to remember, fat tube is to the pump, middle is the vent, midsized is the return.

***Interim post***

I find it helps when you get all your motor pieces back from the machine shop.

More delays...

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

I also find it helps when the machine shop orders you the correct head bolt kit, not one from a 6.0 pre-2000 where the head bolts are 1.5" too long for my 2004 LS motor.

One of their guys drove across town tonight after work to bring me my motor pieces (including flexplate) that they forgot to bring me the other night. I think, ok no problem....but they didn't bring me the flexplate bolts! Now I find out the bolts for the heads are wrong too!

Oh, and not to mention they wrecked my camshaft position sensor too when they loaded the motor onto the delivery truck...

More delays...

Well, I got all my parts from the shop today including correct bolts.

What I'm going to do is put together a part number list of everything that I used in case someone wants to do the same thing as me.

At this point, I'm putting the motor back together starting at the short block. I'm basically going in reverse steps to the teardown, and will add in special notes if there is something to say about it.

Here the heads are going back on and a pic of how the valves cleaned up:
