inner cowl panel? weld in or epoxy?
I finally finished welding up the inner cowl damage on my 70 gmc. I have the new inner cowl fitted up and ready to go. Should I drill it full of holes and plug weld it or should I use panel bonding adhesive, if so any tips or advise what brand?
I'm leaning to panel bond for a few reasons, ease of use and waters tightness. I have become a better welded lately, so much so that now only 85% my welds looks like Fido's butt. Should I use body filler over my welds to smooth them out or just use a seam sealer and call it good. Do I need to prime before filler or just add filler right over bare metal. I have attached a picture of my current progress. |

I like the panel adhesive idea, but I don't weld. I would spray epoxy primer inside and out, then panel adhesive the part in place, maybe weld a couple dowel pins or bolts to locate it.. probably not an easy place to weld.

martinsr did a test with panel adhesive.....with impressive results

I did panel bond adhesive on my 2004 rear wheel wells. Rusted out bad. I didn't need it to look pretty as the fender flare covered my repair.
I really like the way it turned out. I went with Lord Fusor. Good stuff.

If you use paneled adhesive it has to be to bare metal not over primer

Foot stumper Evercoat makes some of the best products on the market today! Including slick sand and feather fill high build primers! And is used by a lot of the top shops today, it is not spray filler but a high build primer with O shrinkage. You’re misinformation helps no one

follow up-
I used duraglass to smooth out the welds on the cowl and painted with eastwood rust enscapsulator, then primer. I used shop line single stage in an aerosol can from a local paint shop. Im a crappy bodyman and painter but it looks good to me. This is a low buck project to learn. I had to grind down to bare metal where the adhesive would bond. I used a panel glue from saimax 750 from a local body shop. It had a long working time of 70 minutes or so, which was nice. It looked pretty runny but stayed in the seams nice. It sat over nice and feels real solid and set up well. I have a few spots to clean up. I liked how it came out. A few pics to see how it worked. adhesive squeeze out on first pic, cowl to windshield seam in the second and cowl before panel install. |
