Re: Suburban 3500 ??

Might have been a CUCV II Suburban converted back to civilian badging. But those were made after 1988. I don't think there were any Suburbans in the first CUCV batch but I can't ignore the possibility of a few custom orders that didn't make the normal procurement roles.

Re: Suburban 3500 ??

I remember some 3/4 ton pickups in the 80's that had a trailer package with one ton brakes witch gave the higher gross vehicle weight .

Re: Suburban 3500 ??

A 1990 I had years ago had been my fathers at one point. When he ordered it from the dealer it came with a Dana 60 front and a full float rear, I don't know if it came from the factory that way or it was dealer installed but it had 3500 badges on it. I ended up selling it about 8 years ago and sorry I did about a year later. I am now building up a 91 with the same axle arrangement.

Re: Suburban 3500 ??

Suburban was built in Canada if that is of any importance. I put the rims and tires on it along with the front rancho springs and rear block.

Wonder what the VIN says it is (2500 or 3500).

Re: Suburban 3500 ??

If it's factory it's some special COPO deal. And it would have the 3 in it's VIN. One or some maybe were built, for military or some oil sheik, whatever but a 3500 Suburban was not 'offered'.

Frame did not look any different than a normal 'burb. Just had the big axles and brakes. I don't have the paper work anymore.

All square Suburbans were built in Flint, Michigan. There were no Suburbans built in Canada.

They probably changed the emblems. Probably not a build error in the plant, because there should not have been any 3500 emblems on Line 2 (the Blazer/Suburban line). Pickups were built on Line 1.

Re: Suburban 3500 ??

No idea really, like I said he ordered it special and waited about 3 months if I recall correctly. Was his 'retirement/fishing' rig. Don't know if it was factory or dealer built.

Re: Suburban 3500 ??

Well, a few years ago my late (half) brother in law down in TX was swapping Duramax engines into brand new Suburbans in their dealership, so I guess anything is possible if a customer wants to pay for it.

Re: Suburban 3500 ??

From a dealership, yes, but not from factory. A Suburban with 3500 axles under it would still have a 2500 frame and a 2500 VIN. The factory might still build just one special vehicle for you using any current parts available but they won't create a whole new VIN series for you. A dealer modifying a brand new vehicle for a customer is no different than me driving a new one home and doing the same modifications

Oh, I agree - but the dealer might have or probably changed out the emblem on the side, though that doesn't seem very ethical.

Or maybe … this Suburban just self-identifies as a "3500" We mustn't be too critical, you know

Re: Suburban 3500 ??

I've been swapping and adding emblems for a long time that weren't meant for that vehicle. I wonder if the dealership also stuck those bowtie emblems on the fenders, or pinstripes above the side trim?

GM does produce one ton Suburbans for fleet purchase. Here’s a brochure for the 2019 MY: https://www.gmfleet.com/content/dam/...nspecguide.pdf
