Re: Frame paint options
SPI epoxy will be the best option. It lays out smooth, has a nice sheen (not too flat or too glossy), doesn't have to be top coated, and has UV protection so it won't fade. It has excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance. If you do decide to top coat it you have a 7 day window to re-coat without the need for sanding.

Re: Frame paint options
Go with the SPI, you won’t be disappointed.

Epoxy primer does not have UV protection so dont be surprised when it "chalks" as any epoxy will.

Re: Frame paint options
I repaired a cowl hood years ago for a guy that liked it in sealer and ran it for at least 3-4 years on his car before final painting and it never chalked, not saying it has UV protection in it or not but it definitely looked good when I saw it again!

Re: Frame paint options
My understanding is it doesn’t have UV protection But if it’s on the frame it’s not going to get the sun

Re: Frame paint options
When I said sealer I mean SPI reduced and used as a sealer

Re: Frame paint options
SPI epoxy can be used as a topcoat if it's not going to be in direct sunlight (like on a frame) and it's uv/fade resistance can be increased by letting it induce for four hours before spraying it.

Re: Frame paint options
John , when you say induce, what exactly does that mean?..mix epoxy and let sit for 4 hrs?

Re: Frame paint options
Yes, there's a 30 min induction time already recommended on the label. Barry says letting it induce for 4 hours is optimal for UV resistance and sprayability.

Re: Frame paint options
Good to know about 4 hrs, frames don’t see much UV any way

Re: Frame paint options
I used 2 coats of SPI Epoxy and topcoat with Medallion Rubber Seal MRS-4200.
It comes out to an absolutely beautiful sheen and really lays out nice. I just got done spraying the frame and a bunch of other parts for my new truck. But this is my other one: |

Epoxy Primer is just that ... "primer". A coating to interface between metal and another coating such as high build urethane primer or paint. It's not designed to be left open to the elements indefinitely. It's "primer"! It's designed to give corrosion protection from under it. Top coats have UV protection because they are "top coats". If you want to use any epoxy primer on a frame because it's just the right shade of black with the right sheen, go right ahead. Nobody is saying you can't. Just don't fool yourself into believing it has UV protection because all epoxy primers including SPI, DO NOT have UV protection. Again, I called SPI and they couldn't confirm with documentation that their primer has UV protection therefore it doesn't!

Re: Frame paint options
I used 3 coats of SPI on the frame and suspension components.
Two years later it still looks like new.....not alot of sun exposure and tough as nails. The induction time and stirring the crap out out of it is key. Don't get in a hurry. |

Re: Frame paint options
Some people sit around and read books other people get out and work on their own trucks! I originally stated that to my understanding it did not have UV protection your frame and suspension don’t see much sunlight anyway I really don’t think it’s an issue but we will find out! I painted my frame and all of the suspension with PPG‘s epoxy primer $500 a gallon and then topcoded it with Eastwoods top-of-the-line ceramic urethane. I had some parts left and did not want to buy more paint so I gave them three coats of SPI epoxy black Everything was blasted to white metal so in 20 years from now I’ll report back to y’all and let you know which one held up the best lol

Re: Frame paint options
You call me a troll after calling me a snake oil salesman and I have skin in the game. I do have skin in the game. My brother-in-law and I founded the master series coating line in 1988. You were 8 years old at the time. My brother-in-law and I attended every major event Carlisle, Hershey, Daytona, Dunkirk New York. At the major shows we had at least 3 stands and we did it year after year until 2006, show after show and seeing the same people every year and no one ever accused us or anyone of selling snake oil or called us a fraud. Master crap has sold over 200,000 cans to date. I looked at those panels I don't see the M that you claim you see. I retired from the business years ago. It's now mastercoat LLC is a corporation. And my brother-in-law and I don't get the time out of it. If you're ever ready to have an intelligent conversation which I doubt let's compare products, for corrosion resistance, solvent resistance and any other test you want to run. Our data sheets have complete information of all the different test for the last 32 years. So Mr. exper with t your 3 day Nace course have a good evening.
