Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Finally got some painting done....but not red...I had previously painted the dash panels,door panels,and radio box with rattle can paint...never was real happy with the results...so I had the guy at SW paints match me up some real paint...added flattner to it to semigloss level...I think they turned out much nicer than before...
Also gave me a chance to try out my little baby spray gun...its the Eastwood concours touch up gun..heres a door panel that's done showing the color..the rest of the parts are in the shade.... and the sweet little gun...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

looking good. It's amazing how nice a job some of the cheap guns will lay out. I had to get a set of the cheap harbor freight guns when I did my 72. I was on a schedule and my dads Devillis had a cracked tip.. Perfect coverage and only 1 run. I was impressed since it had been nearly 20 years since I shot a truck. Only thing I did t like about the HF gun was it is impossible to put it back to the same setting after cleaning so I just kept a test panel near by for final tweaks.

I am waiting to see the red. I think that single stage looks much nicer on older trucks. It usually has a flatter deeper color compared to clear which usually has a more wet appearance.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

So after getting the little paint job done, I started in on the tailgate...I had quite a few low spots from before so I had added more high build...here you can see how the panels really slicked out...those plexiglass sanding boards are working great for flat surfaces....you can see the only low spot I have left is right under the R...a little hand sanding knocked the gloss off and I'm gonna live with it...
I've worked all afternoon sanding on this tailgate..its unreal how many nooks and crannies there are..but I've got the whole thing sanded and slick..now just need to follow up with finer grit for paint...
Sanding around the (INTERNATIONAL) is extremely tedious...I made a half dozen small sanding boards to work around the letters.......
One step closer..

You have not even broken through the high build. That means keep going to see if you can get out the low, or try bumping from the back side??. You can always spray one coat as a sealer if you break through..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Robert.,,i sanded a good bit more after I took this picture...I was starting to see the epoxy thru the high build..you can see one little spot in that pic where it went thru hb..
I started out with 220g , but switched to 180g ... the 220 would immediately clog up..so I still have to work my way up thru the grits before I'm done.so ive still got lots of sanding ahead .ill bump on it a little below the R and see what happens..i really hate to do to much for fear of making it worse...which I'm good at...
there is a lot of stressed metal around the lettering from the stamping...when it still had the gloss look to it you could see it at the top and bottom of each letter...the extra hb covered most of it

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

either way it looks 10x better than any IH pickup that I have seen in person. I pass by an awesome survivor that sits outside advertising for a farm when I go into Knoxville. In general the finer examples usually qualify as drivers at best. There has been a Scout sitting by my parents house on a car lot for a year now. I am always curious if it is the location or if they want way to much coin for it.

When I was in high school a buddy bought a Scout 2 for $75 because it needed points and they couldn't figure which one it took. The later ones could be a real PITA with all the parts they got from different manufacturers.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Robert, I took your advise (again) ,I took a hammer to the tailgate...I used my hand as a backer on the raised letter side and hit it 3 times under the R from the backside..then put the guide coat on it, a little sanding showed 50% of it gone...repeat the process, a little more sanding and the low is gone..

The fixes are cheap before the paint goes on, right? Well done!

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

no problem Roger..John (theastronaut) showed those in one of his posts and I stole it from him...you can see one of them laying on the tailgate in the last pic..that one is simply 1/4" thick plexiglass that's 2"x6"...I radiused the corners and beveled all the edges on the sandpaper side so they wouldnt dig in...on the topside I used 3 pieces of duct tape to make a handle..and I'm using adhesive back sand paper..
I also made one 12" long from 1/4" and have a variety of sizes and shapes I made from 1/8"..
heres the thread where John shared them...http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=fender&page=2
you can see the pics of them upclose on page 2
and heres how mine look from the end..
red=sandpaper
gray= plexiglass with radius edges
black=duct tape...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Heres another example of things not turning out like you hope..
When I painted the interior before , I had the windshield opening taped up like a windshield..and I painted it like I was sitting in the seat..well the paint completely missed the little step where the window trim goes..I hoped the trim would cover it, but it made it look worse..looked like a gray stripe across the dash..you can see the step in the 1st pic where the white arrows are pointing..so I sanded it all down, and taped it different..this time I've got paint on it...
That also meant I got to try out my new paint filters...you can see they worked pretty good..dont laugh at my rigging...it was the only way I could get the filters close...duct tape is holding it all to keep it from falling..

Nice work! Here’s my philosophy on most anything shop and maintenance related: if it’s stupid and it works it ain’t stupid.

For someone who claims this doesn’t have to be a “great” paint job you are certainly doing great work.
