What are good bang for your buck speakers these days?
I've been trying to buy some speakers for my 72 but there seem to be a lot of options these days. I don't want to get some horrid sounding ones and I don't want super expensive ones. Currently I have some new Pioneer 3 way 6x9's to go behind the seat. I also have a new classic sound center speaker. But I don't think 3 speakers will be enough. I have a 50wx4 stereo. I might add a mild sub and amp later too. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks Ryan.

Volumetrically optimized enclosures are key. A low dollar driver in a proper enclosure sound better than a high dollar driver in an improper enclosure. Download the program WinISP and input the data for your driver.

I have had good luck with Kenwood and Pioneer speakers in my car and didnt break the bank. Spent around $100 replacing all my speakers and the sound quality is amazing compared to the OEM equipment. I currently have 2 Kenwood 6x9s in the doors of my car and Im surprised at how well they sound, highs and bass sound great. For the lower cost stuff, Powerbass and Planet Audio really sound good. If you don't mind spending a little more then look into Infinity or Polk audio.

I just put a set of Polk DB651s in the rear doors of my '08 Crew cab, with a set of Alpine SPS610C in the front doors (Tweeters in the A-Pillars). Very pleased with this setup. Getting ready to start a new thread looking for budget bass setup to fill out the bottom end.

I'm on the outer fringe here.....lol. I actually like using custom enclosures with Caddy Bose speakers. These things are adequate sounding in Caddy's however, once you push them hard with an amp they really sound good! The 2007-up Bose Caddy's like the CTS series have some amazing sounding 6.5 and 5.25 midbass drivers. The center dash speaker is a 4" full range loudspeaker which I've ran with 75W and the a-pillar tweets I've pushed with 50W ea. I've ran a combination of these speakers (3-ohm rated each-weird In know but its Bose...) bridged in series using a big 4-channel JL Audio amp from a swapmeet and I had about $150 in components and about that much in wiring....lol-that I don't skimp on. All the speakers were junkyard sourced. BTW I also used a GM theftlock CD player....stock flat EQ curve since the amp had its own EQ adjustments. I could have gotten even pickier with a nice passive EQ setup but I wanted to keep with a small budget just for kicks.

I've always been a huge fan of Pioneer speakers and have used them in all my vehicles in the past. The only thing I don't like about them is that there isn't enough bass for me so I always end up getting an amp and subwoofer for the back. I've had really good luck with the MTX brand.

I really like Alpine as well as Pioneer and Kenwood as well just kind of depends on personal preference is all. All of them are decent and won't break the wallet.

When you get down to comparing brands watch out for huge peak amp numbers. Pay attention to the rms(root means square) amp number because that is real working/sounding number.
Butyl rubber surround probably flexes best and lasts a long time. Waterproof cone material is best Neodimium (rare earth) magnets are the strongest. Sony does a good job in meeting the above requirements through ebay for a reasonable cost. |
