sliding tranny back to repair flexplate ?

I,ve seen the threads for sliding tranny back with 6 inch bolts for sliders but as a worst case scenario could the bolts get snapped off in the block or would the bolts just bend. I don,t mean tranny falling out but just the weight if tranny leaned forward or something like that. Some used 4 bolts and some just used 2 on the bottom. Just wondering if this a safe way to do this

Use grade 8 bolts, and they seem to work good the couple of times I tried it with th350's. I also didn't just let the tyranny hang. I wrapped a ratchet strap around under the pan to help pull it up. Removing tension from the bolts. Or you could use a jack too.

It is absolutely safe as long as you dont try and do pull ups on the tranny hanging on the bolts. A 400 Turbo weighs about 140 pounds full of fluid. Support the transmission with a floor jack or tranny jack with wheels on it. Make sure to hold the converter in place with the trans. as you roll/slide the trans. back just far enough to reach the flex plate bolts.

I did my 68 2wd chevy in the college parking lot with the front end drove up on a parking curb about 19 years ago using 4 of the longest 3/8 bolts I could find in town. I had a 700R4 in it at the time. Park brake on and wheels blocked, unhooked drive shaft and slid it back. About an hour or so give or take with basic hand tools.
