Interesting call about a truck

I called the number on a truck to see what he wanted for it here in town yesteday. The truck 71 cab with rusted through rockers, cab corners, 70's car buckets, no carpet or mat, broken NP205 shifter, no radio, cut dash, red primer on white exterior, 67 or 68 GMC front end and with a chevy bumper, chevy tailgate, dents, worn out 350, sm465, worn out tires and 6 inch lift. No options other than power steering. The young man on the phone said make me an offer so I said $500. He laughed and told me he should get 5,000 on Ebay. He said that the sloped 67-68 hood came original on it too. I tried to help him out but he wouldn't listen.

I hate when people say make a offer ane then get offended when you tell them a price they think is to low. You should of told him then list it on ebay if you can get that much for it.

I ran into something kinda similiar last night. I was on my way to a car show last night and I was taking a back road to get there. Well, there on the side of the road in someone's front yard is a shortbox pickup with a for sale sign in the window. Here's the run down; '67 2wd shortbox pickup with the small window cab, dr side rocker is completely gone, pass side seems to be fine. '68-up stepside bed with a big sheet of plywood in the back to cover the wood that used to be there. It's in red primer. Dr side door is buckled. Big hole cut in the dash for a radio that is no longer there. 3-speed on the column. A blue velour seat oh, with a tire on it. No front bumper. The piece of paper in the window states "built 350" followed by "right side head gasket is blown, motor is otherwise good. Replace headgasket and this is a strong driver"....ready for this....$3,000!!!!!! Now WTF are these people thinking? I was thinking it was a $1,000 truck, maybe $1,500 and I wouldn't have blown whatever it was I was drinking at the time out of my nose. I just don't get it.

I love it when people think they have a gem in the rough and its actually just rough. I left a note with my # on it, on a '72 C/10 sitting by the road because the bed was in good shape, and it had a tach dash. other than that, it had non-72 doors that were rusted out in the weirdest place (on the metal window frame...wtf), there was moss growing all over it, the cab had one of those ugly ass Lund visors that made it rust above the w/s, and the back of the cab was rusted out under the window. no engine, and both of the trailing arms were so rusty it was scary. the old guy who owned it called me up and said he wanted $7,000 for the truck without an engine, but $10k for it with the engine in it (the engine was apparently at the master builders shop ). I asked, "what kind of engine?" (after suppressing laughter, of course) and he replied "I don't know, the kind with 8 cylinders." I made an excuse about having to go to work, and got myself a good laugh outta that.

no let's look at this form a seller's point of view:
I've got a 68 c10 lwb wood floor, 250 3 on tree. No pwer anything. It was in an accident and i've got the pass fender hood, grille, rad suppor, and grill valance to fix it with and they are included. The motor uses no oil, and has quite a bit of recent work on it. 15x8 wheels w/ 275/60?/15 gdyr wingfoots w/ 60% tread. need normal: rockers corners, supports. shifts very tight. doors in AWESOME shape. the motor alone could be sold for what i'm asking.
now mind you i live in an apartment, there's no room to store my .60 bored new rebuilt 350 that's going in the ce68 but in the the back of that pickup. I drive this truck 20+ miles every day. they call, they know the price of the pickup, it's in big red numbers on the back w/s and front w/s $550.0 obo and i get "is the motor in the back included?"
I reply, "no, its for another project" and they then say - get this - "well then, I'll get back w/ you (which means I'm no longer interested)" or "without that motor you're asking too much."

I don't get people!

I went to a car show/flea market/swap meet a week ago. I saw several 67-72 trucks, in varying states of condition. One that I should have bought was a '69 that was very nice, and priced at $7500 (asking). The owner and his wife were both there, and needed to sell it to buy a tractor. They had bought 5 acres and were going to build.

A guy drove up in a mish-mash of a roadster. It was a '28-29 A body on some kind of rails, with a '32 Ford grille and '32 Chevy hood sides. It had a nice sounding engine and a 4-speed. It was basically tacky, at best, yet he had it priced at $17,500.

But the kickers: would you believe that I saw a '60 Fiat for $500? To call it a basketcase would be a high honor. How about a '60 Peugeot 403, with a stuck engine for $2000? It seems that with "high" gas prices, the junk that we never cared for has come out of hiding and has a high price because it got good mileage when gas was cheap.

But, we all have more money in our vehicles than we can get out of them, yet those who decide to sell may think that enthusiasts will pay more because it is an antique. I don't know about you guys, but I'm an antique and I can tell you that nobody is interested in paying more money to hire me because of my age!!

People will charge what others are willing to pay.

i don't deal with "make-me-an-offer" people i'll just pass if they're selling it they should be able to set a price and i'll either pay their price(or close to it) or walk away.

i've just dealt with so many a$$holes who start off not knowing anything at the beginning of the conversation then you make them an honest offer and WHAM BAM all of a sudden you're a dummie and they're an instant expert a total waste of time which sounds like the guy you tried dealing with

I just had the same deal. A guy I know says his neighbor wants to sell his 67 longbox plain jane with 56k miles. Has only one option on the glovebox a 327 motor and that was it and somewhere earlier in life the three speed had been changed to an incorrect old 4speed that was cut in the low hump floor. Body had been hit in box with the boxside replaced with a crapy boxside 15 years ago and bright green while the rest was faded original paint with really no rust. Had basically been sitting for 15 years and the greasy 327 fired up but exhaust shot, radiator leaking, and while it was sitting there it overheated as a frost plug had rusted through and was leaking. I was looking at the cab and front end for my project and maybe the 327 with a overhaul and gaskets. He had no idea what to ask but after 2 hours of nothing made me make an offer. I went right up to my max at $2000 which was plenty in my book and the guy laughed and said a local dealer 10 years ago offered him $3000. I said yeah and it probably was running well then and that dealer went bankrupt a long gone too. He said look at eBay and see what these trucks are bringing. Whatever. Its still sitting in his storage building and probably will get stuffed piled on it again.
I can't figure people out they see a loaded show truck being advertised for $15k and they think there original plain jane run of the mill pickup is a gold mine since it has only 56k miles. I guess that is why there are would be buyers and there are sometimes sellers.

I think that the price is always related to one of two things . . . . . .

1) The person does not really know that much about old vehicles. Or

2) The person does not really wan't to sell it that bad.

As someone mentioned on theis board before, "people are always asking if I will sell my truck". So I just throw out a high number, they laugh and walk away, and then we are both happy, because I didn't want to sell it anyway!
And maybe you get really lucky, and the guy writes you a check for $15K for your truck!

I Agree

What a bunch of BS!!!
Make me an offer sellers are just fishing, because they have no clue, or some jerk *ff at the supermarket told him its worth a fortune, because he saw one at the local car show sell for big dollars, I refuse to deal with people like this.
Same goes, when Advertising a car/truck online, if the buyer ask's for pictures, without calling your listed contact number for information, 99 percent of the time he does'nt have any dough.
I see these sellers on ebay relisting there vehicles over and over, until they finally realize there reserve is the (their own value) and not the market

My luck has been going the other way lately. I passed a 1971 K10 and a 1970 C30 on my way to work every day for about 6 months so one day I stopped and asked the guy if he would sell them. Niether one ran but the transmittions, transfer case, rear ends (1 an Eaton with detroit locker), cabs, sheet metal, and chrome were all good. But the guy said $1000 bucks for both and have them off his land asap. My buddy wanted the block of the 400 for a core and gave me $250 so I ended up paying $750 for my projects.

70GMuttC, yep, there's lots of trucks in the fallon/fernley area, use to live in sparks/reno, theres definately some deals to be had in that area, there's some hidden treasure's in the nixon area by lake pyramid, in the tribal community, got a completely rustfree 70 elky $500 and a 69 nova $400 a couple years back, might wanna check that area, the tribal police officer I bought the elky from had several 67-72 trucks sitting in his yard, most motorless, but rustfree, they're was trucks scattered all over that area

I looked at a '71 SWB 4x4 in a carlot once. Looked AWESOME from 50 feet away. Then i got up close. They wanted a little over $7k for the truck. Looking underneath it, most of the seals in the drivetrian were leaking. Had rust above the rear wheelwells, than had been covered with what looked and felt like caulk and painted over. Rust in the cab supports and starting in the floor. Very ugly mid '70's 350 in it. Pretty much a $2500 truck that had been gussied up with nice wheels, and a paint job hiding lots of shoddy bodywork. Its getting harder and harder to find older vehicles that haven't been butchred up for a decent price.

Cdowns I think you have it right on this guy. I really haven't had much luck with make me an offer most of the time. If he wasn't so cocky on the phone I might have offered $1,000 for this truck. A part of me wants to go back and check it out with more detail and have some fun with this kid.

I was at my g/f's garage sale, and was using my truck to block off a side driveway to keep people from parking there. I did not want to sell my truck at all, but so many people kept asking that I finally just started throwing out a stupid price. $10k, firm. This one guys asked me what I wanted, and then when I told him he tried telling me that it wasn't worth more than a grand, and that there was a totally restored one done the road for only $4k. I told him the honest truth that I didn't really want to sell it but if somebody wanted it bad enough to pay $10k that I would sell. He then spent the next 10 minutes badgering me trying to get me to believe the one grand value and give it up for that . I've put more than 3 grand into fixing the truck up and wouldn't even take less than that just to break even. For not being worth more than a grand, he sure did want it pretty bad . I finally had to tell him to go buy the $4k truck if it was such a good deal and to leave me alone.
