fuel pump return line

Ever since I've owned my truck the return line had been cut and capped off for whatever reason. I went to drive it the other day and smelled fuel when I fired her up, it was the capped line leaking. So I fixed it the right way, after smelling the horrible smell that came from the line. Smelled like 20 year old rotten gas haha. Anyway, is this in my head or actually possible that the truck runs better, idles a lot better, and actually does a little better on gas?

The idle is way smoother and blows less carbon out the pipes now. And she had just a bit of a hesitation from a stop that I couldn't adjust out, that is gone now too. Did the return line cause a bit of fuel back up in the carb that is gone now by hooking up the return line?
