they use a thumb drive to upload a csv file, so you can do gearing changes pretty easy by comparing indicated to gps.

I couldnt see putting the pretty gauges in that dash with the runs in the clear though, so I followed jims advice and sanded with 200 then 400 then 1000 and knocked the runs and even all the sand scratches out, and laid down a new base and then clear job.

I even managed to not wait long enough to pull the tape and tapped it on the fresh clear. oops. but a spritz of a final coat made it even prettier. I sanded and recleared the steering wheel too.

since I couldnt do anything else to the cab for fear of knocking dirt or rust out of the roof onto the fresh dash paint I started messing with the hubcaps. I stopped by bowtie bits and picked up my GMC caps. they dont mount to the mobsteels, only held here with double sided tape, but I DID figure out how to modify the scratch/dent caps mobsteel sent to me to weld to the gmc caps. so win win.

tomorrow will be a short day, maybe I will get the filler done on the passenger door. I have to go to canton oh for the rest of the week. I might stop by tony packos in toledo. its all about that christmas cash though!

hood latch. it fit as well as my high school pants, but thats because of all the accident damage (the hood latch panel, not my pants).


they repop these but they are $170 so this is what I got. I used the gentle pressure of bolting it across the front from left to right until it was in. there was a lot of stress at first, the missing bolt in the corner actully snapped as I was going. its destressed now that its in though.


everything latches, I may tweak it some more but this is close to as good as it gets with the homogenization of all the mismatched parts

haha thanks, it does look a LITTLE better in the pictures than real life, but really its just the grille surround holding the hood edge up a little proud of the passenger side fender, I may give it a few "technical taps".

I learned on the last truck that installing the filler neck was better as a stick through than a bolt on, too many things to get perfect if you bolt it to the bedside. I use pinch welt on the rough cut and it works out nice, and you can remove and replace the bed without trying to get past the running boards and aprons and bedsides from below to get the filler neck loose.

I shortened the rubber hose about 4 inches and took another 3 out of the steel neck.

I sanded the welds on the cab corners down flush and put the bed back on.

after my royal dumbness took another two inches out of the rubber hose, finally we had the right stickout. I used some pinch welting to finish the job, keeps the neck from rattling.

painted the seat frame, nothing fancy to show except the excellent color match.

I worked on the caps too. the rally style caps mobsteel sent me fit nice but arent the look I am going for. I had a spare 41 cap so I cut the mount off and checked the height.

it is just slightly proud of the wheel, I gotta figure out if that matters because mounting them like this is easy but mounting them to fit closer will be more difficult, ah crap I just figured out what the right thing to do is didnt I?

did the running board seals, for guys who havent yet let me run it down. the seal goes on top of the cab lip which has holes drilled in it, the screws pass through the holes upward through the rubber of the seal and into the mounting plate. this can be as fun as a pineapple enema. I find the best way to do it though is to drill through the rubber into the mounting plate in three places, screwing them down tight so they arent proud of the rubber. then drill through the rubber at the locations of the mount plate holes. then its simple to install as an assembly.

its a 10 footer for sure. I was going to spend some time with some filler to do small areas like the scratch on the door and the gas filler low spot, but then I sprayed some paint on the bed rails and hooollll eeeee shoot. I would grow old filling and sanding. I am going to stick to my original plan of a one-color squirt. this isnt a restoration, more taking something useless and ready for the shredder and making it useful again. some will undoubtedly disagree. I will send those guys refunds.

running boards: the truck was a flatbed so it had the shorty running boards. the bed trailer had the rest, it was a matter of measuring once, cutting twice, and putting them together.

I know there are lots of ways to make running board mounts but I havent ever done anything but use the original mounts trimmed to fit the s10 frame.

worked on the lights too. the 98+ trucks use a ground triggered dual bulb setup for high/low/DRL so I dont try to fight it. I use a dual bulb headlight and modify the buckets to use the new retainer.

the ring fits correctly, its just not screwed on.

and in the cosmic balance, there is only one constant. first, the rad showed signs of leaking.

second, I wetsanded the dash with some 2k and the can of crystal clear enamel I took off the shelf actually just said enamel, so I put a nice black stripe on the dash. quitting time.
