Re: 55-59 chevy front motor mounts
I know the rubber is still available from NAPA auto parts. I just bought some a couple of weeks ago. I think the catalog showed the metal shaft as available too. I think the 6 and V8's are the same piece just mounted in a different location.

Re: 55-59 chevy front motor mounts
What v8 motor do the original motor mounts work with? I have a 58 and would like to drop a v8 without all welding and cutting. Thanks

Re: 55-59 chevy front motor mounts
To add the original style V8 front mounts to a truck that had a six you will need the brackets that bolt to the front crossmember as well as the posts, washers, and rubber biscuits. If I were you I would buy one of the aftermarket crossmembers that use side mounts. You can get one for less than an original style setup. I have the original style mounts on my 57 with a 350 engine and they interfere with the power steering pump and also the outlet side of the fuel pump. You can work around the fuel pump issue but I had to modify my driver side engine mounting bracket as well as the power steering pump mounting bracket to get it to fit. If I had it to do over I would use the side mounts.

Re: 55-59 chevy front motor mounts
I just used 1/2" plate for my front brackets, bolted to the cross member using existing holes with a big and smaller grade 8 bolts. Did have to modify the driver side block bracket for the PS, did not have any issues with the fuel pump.

OrrieG: I was referring to the tight bend you have to make in the 3/8th inch tubing coming out of the fuel pump in order to clear the mount. How did you handle that? My tubing benders won't make a bend close enough to the fitting to make it work. I got some multi-wall tubing from NAPA that doesn't require a bender and got it done, but I don't like the way it looks. |

Re: 55-59 chevy front motor mounts
Since my last post I was flipping through the projects thread and saw this. I hope Reddzx doesn't mind my using his pic. What application can I ask the parts man for that will get me a fuel pump like this? The NAPA guy let me look through his book and none of the pumps had this inlet and outlet configuration.

Re: 55-59 chevy front motor mounts
I haven't made up that line yet, so I might be in for a challenge. On the fuel pump I wonder if it is the style that the bottom bolts on and if you can unbolt and turn the bottom without affecting the diaphram workings? I've never taken one apart to see.

Re: 55-59 chevy front motor mounts
I would not use any after market mount system. The do it yourself plate mount is a good idea, though it should be braced to kinda look like the stock mounts do when attached to the crossmember. And if memory serves the stand off studs are shorter length than the 6 cylinder. If your going to butcher the frame anyway then do what ever, but if you ever plan to sell the truck to a guy that wants stock it just becomes a molested mess. Sorry its my opinion.

such as one from Holley etc then remove screws and rotate bottom till all outlets clear Gene |

Re: 55-59 chevy front motor mounts
I was looking in my Jegs catalog for something else this morning and noticed all the after market pumps have the fittings facing the frame rail. They have one that the bottom rotates 360 degrees "to fit any application" as they say.

Re: 55-59 chevy front motor mounts
After reading Gene's post I looked on EBay and it looks like most of the pumps there allow you to index the fittings to the direction you need. Wish I'd known it before.

Re: 55-59 chevy front motor mounts
If my memory server me correctly
you can buy stock type mounts with a provision to mount the Power steering pump to the Mount Gene |

Re: 55-59 chevy front motor mounts
If you do not use a bell housing with mounting provisions
you will need a strap or chain to act as a torque limiter to keep motor from trying to rotate and bind throttle linkage etc Gene |
