Rag Joint Replacement

Okay, yes I did a search and was left even more confusedl...

Took me a while of searching just to figure out what the silly thing is called.

My Rag Joint has disintegrated. I replaced the steering column and joint with one from a '65. Worked for a day and also came apart. Does anyone know where I can get one of these (new please)?

Application:
1966 Chevy C-20
Power steering
Power brakes
auto
350 (crate replacement)

Re: Rag Joint Replacement

Um... my truck is a '66. Weren't there changes to the column in '67? Some kind of slider?

Seriously? Maybe do a web search for your year truck.

Re: Rag Joint Replacement

So the rag joint normally is attached to the steering box.
One end is splined? What diameter and how many splines are there on your box?
What diameter and configuration is the other (shaft) side? 3/4" Double D?

I did. Thanks for the suggestion though. Almost all of the joints available are for '67-on. So, being a general ignoramus on this kind of thing, I started this thread hoping for some relief from confusion and frustration. Maybe someone who knows if a '67 joint will work would hopefully let me know. I have little enough to spend on this project and was rather hoping not to waste money on useless parts.

Re: Rag Joint Replacement

You can probably rebuild your exisiting rag joint using a newer one, just take them apart and reassemble using your original metal bits. Did that with my nova long before rag joints where readily available everywhere.

Now there's an excellent idea. There are kits available on eBay as well. - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=614332

Re: Rag Joint Replacement

You can buy a rebuild kit.
Grind the heads off the existing rivets.
Replace the fiber disk.
Assemble with bolts and lock-nuts to replace the rivets.

Time consuming grinding off the old rivets but not hard and very cheap too.

Re: Rag Joint Replacement

If you have a nearby napa or maybe other quality parts store, there are rebuild kits...you could take what's left of yours and see how close it matches....
