I figure that if I get a flat, then I will take it off the Tahoe (steel wheel) when the wife picks me up! doubt it will fit though (better check)

I don't plan on running one right now... i only bought 4 tires as well!

I am surprised- actually quite surprised.
I drive my truck almost every day and would never consider not having a spare. Guess I will pick up one of the vertical bed mount carriers and bolt it to that inside the bed on the driver's side.
It has been several years since a flat on anything but the mower, mower trailer and the wheelbarrows, but I want one anyway.
I enjoyed the responses, especially the one about "around my seat belt". Knife makers call that an "organic tool rest", a very important tool for grinding blades

Just finished my third straight 16 hour day on the truck, finishing the windscreen channel for the installer and some other odds and ends, including a couple hundred feet of wire in the engine compartment. I forgot how much I enjoy the smell of flux-core solder.
Picked up my new cowl hood from the painters, hope to have the truck back on the road within a month or so. Will try to remember the camera tomorrow in case anyone has forgotten what primer, over-spray and sand paper look like

Because that in-cab gas tank may cause you to die a very painful death.

Six months ago I bumped into a lawsuit involving a young man that crashed a 1970 long bed. In the impact, he suffered a dislocated hip from the lap belt. He would have been fine but the cab was quickly engulfed in flames from a slow leak in the gas tank behind his seat. Bystanders testified that even though the driver was concious he became disoriented and could not get out of the truck. The heat was too intense for them to pull him to safety so the guy just burned while they were yelling instruction to him on how to get out. After what they estimated to be ten minutes, the driver finally kicked out the windshield and crawled out on the hood. As they pulled him off the hood and put the fire out on his body, large chunks of his skin just fell off. He layed in the hospial for a few hours in miserable pain and then died.

Sorry to be so graphic (although the pictures are a hundred times worse) but you asked the question. Even a slight risk of burning alive makes this relatively easy mod well worth the time and $. Move the tank and find a new home for the spare.

It takes one hell of an impact to do anything to a stock in cab tank... if it doesn't leak anyways. And if it leaks, you're a friggen retarded tool for driving it.

Spare?I have plenty laying around the house and my shop.I have onr under my bed,but it`s prolly been there since the truck was new.Seriously,I pulled the spare,this year,from my CheyenneSuper and it was a factory 8.25x16.5 rim and a bias 8-ply...original.

The tank behind the seat is a safe place.We`d have heard about it by now after 30+ years.

seriously, none of my trucks have ever been able to accomodate a spare in the stock location, typically due to to exhaust.
I usually keep a tire in the bed, which can be removed if need be

I share a similar attitude regarding the merits of the lawsuit. But that doesn't change the fact that but for the location of the tank this fellow would have survived the accident with minor injuries. The risk may be low but the potential outcome is devastating enough that moving the tank becomes a no-brainer IMO.

when you get sued for havin a fuel tank under the bed that sprays and ignites all over some one who rear ends you, you may think otherwise.

If you throw out a tire just becouse it has a plug in it... You can throw them my way.

Plugs in cycle tires are unsafe because as the bike leans, it can cause the plug to "squirm" out due to the contact patch shifting. I don't actually throw out the car/truck tires that I've plugged, but I do break them off the rim and put a patch in soon after the tire was initially plugged. A patch won't pull or back out, and now they have patch plugs that are supposed to keep contaminants from getting in between plies/belts/rubber and screwing up the tire in the long term.

At work, we won't even consider a patch. The boss man goes nuts when you start talking about patches.

Don't have a jack or a spare.... or even a garage.... The only blowout I've ever had was on a set of 15 year old dry rotted tires on an 86 camaro. Everything else has been slow leaks I was able to plug. I keep a can of fix a flat, plugs, and a portable air thingy in the truck when I go on a trip.

The back tire on my Z71 has THREE plugs in it. I have to go to construction sites and I get all sorts of nails and screws in tires. The plugs have about 30K on them, at least the "oldest" one does. Doesn't leak at all, well no more than tires normally loose a little air over a few months. Just a couple psi or so.
