Putting 235 back in Sub-framed '54?

Hi Guys, I am new to this forum but not to old trucks. Since I am not a mechanic I would like to have some input from you guys concerning a '54 truck I just bought. The truck has been switched over to a mid '80's Camaro front clip. I did get a good running 235 included with the truck. My question is- is it possible to put the 235 engine back into the truck which now has the camaro clip? I like the idea of power steering and brakes but have always wanted to fix up an old 235 with 2 or 3 carbs and split exhaust. Any ideas? Thanks, Lowell

Re: Putting 235 back in Sub-framed '54?

What year is the 235? If its 58 and newer is should have side engine mount lugs. A quick measurement will tell if the engine will fit without hitting the firewall. If not it will just take some fabrication. If they kept the second crossmember then you can use a early bellhousing to support the back. If not then you will need to run a transmission that has a mount on it. I don't think it would be that hard, just some planning.

Re: Putting 235 back in Sub-framed '54?

Thanks for the reply. The engine is supposed to be original to the truck. I would, if possible, like to put a 350 th tranny behind the 235. There are no side bolts for motor mounts and I think there are some old mounts which went under the front of the 235. Hope this info helps! Lowell

if you run a 350 tranny you will have to run a adapter as they do not bolt up. i have a 235 out of a 54 chevy car (which bolted down from the timing cover)it has 3 holes on each side did you see anything like that?

Re: Putting 235 back in Sub-framed '54?

Hi Lowrodderchev, I just looked at the engine and there is a flange under the timing cover behind the bottom pully. There are two bolt holds in the flange which appear to be about 4 inches apart. In the back of the truck I also found a metal plate, approx. 8"x2"x1" high. There are matching holes in the plate plus two other holes about 7" apart. This looks like it was a motor mount. Lowell
